  1. I have the George Cables on vinyl (very nice) and would really like to get the Walt Dickerson !

New member here. Yes the Dickerson is excellent. I have the Japanese version. The other Dickerson disc from this time (Tell me only the beautiful things) is even better. The opening unaccompanied solo on the first track is one of my favourite Dickerson moments, and Ware is very fine throughout. The two Air albums also fine.

Are there two Dickersons then? I thought that the Why Not Dickerson cd was Tell Me Only The Beautiful Things.

  2. I wonder what this is (from the dustygroove site)...

Eternal Myth Revealed Part 1 – The Story Of A Universal Being And His Music 1933 to 1959 (limited edition 20 CD set)

    Sun Ra

    Mid-June, 2011

It's the next Transparency release - was originally planned as a 4CD set , then 14 but has now blown out to 20CD set

    HELLO !

Part One of 'The Eternal Myth Revealed' will be at the CD pressing plant and book printer/binder in two weeks -- and I have recently been told that the album will be about TWENTY CDs (rather than the previously estimated fourteen discs).

Sun Ra Archive editor Michael Anderson has slightly expanded his excellent project demo to 56 minutes -- now on two handy Youtube links (directly below my signature here.). Most definitely worth spending an hour with.

Thanks to all who have ordered this box set --- and as release date approaches, we really need for EVERY person reading this to order the album. Please listen to the demo and get back to me! --- PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL NOT BE CHARGING A HIGHER PRICE FOR THE TWENTY-CD VERSION OF THE ALBUM. This is still advance offered to mail order customers for just $65 plus shipping. (Please see the paypal ordering info at the end of this e-mail.)

    All the best,

    Michael Sheppard / Transparency

Does anyone know how to sign up for the email?

  3. Doing some searching, I found several threads on other boards that describe something similar happening with the Plugged Nickel box last summer. Amazon was ultimately unable to fill the orders...I wonder if some supplier is doing something shady that causes Amazon to list it as in stock, or if it's just an error of some kind. In any case I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Yep.. according to those same threads, however, people have been getting copies this time around. Apparently, it's the real Columbia/SME manufactured Plugged Nickel box, not CD-Rs. In the Miles "trumpet case" mega collection, there is a blank space left for one more set. Hmm. Could this be the first sign of SME reissuing the PN sessions one final time before the CD reissue boom era (already being administered last rites) becomes extinct?

I've seen some discussion on this in the past that isn't consistent with my understanding.

I was in the Jazz Record Mart in Chicago last June and they had a new copy in stock that they were selling for list price. I asked them about it and they said they'd just gotten it in. They had been told that it had never actually gone out of print (as I think Sony were still accepting orders) just that it was backordered.

So last year there definitely were new copies of this around and stricly speaking it hadn't gone "out of print". It looks like the same thing has happened again.

And the "space" in the trumpet set was, I believe, for the t-shirt rather than any other box set.

  4. I'd really recommend an earlier series of Swedish novels - the Martin Beck series by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo (wife and husband respectively).

Second the Elmore Leonard and Simenon recommendations (although the ELmore Leonard's don't tend to be detective novels for what that is worth).

Also worth checking out anything by James Ellroy, although this may be more of an acquired taste. I've recently been reading the Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr, which are set in Nazi and post-War Germany and are evocative, while retaining a good sense of humour.

  5. Technically, a 1955 recording is no longer a bootleg in the EU. It's public domain there. Anyone can distribute it in the EU.

Once a bootleg, always a bootleg. It is not a question of whether or not some countries make it legal or illegal. It is a question of agreement from, and compensation to, artists or their estates.

Ethically that is true but as we know people will make different ethical conclusions. Legally I suspect Kevin is correct.

  6. the infamous article I reposted a while back. We concluded that Jack Chambers made a lot of gross accusations about Brooks carer, Blue Note and other Blue Note musicians and music being unreleased due to drug habits.

Does anyone have the Michael Cuscuna response to the original article (and the Jack Chambers response to that)?

  7. You don't get charged a fee but the exchange rate that they offer will be worse than the one that they would offer to me if I were purchasing something in Dollars. So if I wanted to send you $100 this would cost me more in pounds sterling than the number of pounds sterling that you would get for converting $100.

This is known as the "bid-offer" spread and is effectively a charge that anyone coverting currency will make. If you are ever at an airport you'll see that the spread is huge compared to other options.

  8. Good news and bad news for any interested buyers: the price has dropped to $117 but now it's "temporarily out of stock".

Interesting news. I placed an order today, so I'll find out soon enough if the item comes through. I've wanted the set for some time, but I'm not into paying collector prices. They are selling it as new, so it better be the real set. They might not know it, but if they send a $120 set of CDRs to my crib, they are going to have a bad day (heh heh).

this is available again. I was in jazz record mart in chicago today and they had sealed copy for 125 dollars. When I asked about it they said that on sony's business to business website it had never said that it was out of print - only that orders were on hold. Anyway the copy in stock had only just been ordered.

I believe that they do mail order (it is a wonderful store - with it and dusty groove chicago puts any other city I've been to to shame)
