One thing absent from most discussions about the M clan is that, had they all been abducted by aliens on December 31, 1979, someone else would have assumed their place in the 1980s.  What happened with Wynton and jazz is very much reflective of what was going on in the US with regards to cinema, fashion, pop music, architecture, politics, and probably other spheres that I'm not thinking about.  In the wake of Vietnam and Watergate, it was as if the entire US experienced a self-imposed mass delusion that it was the 1950s again, America was prosperous, and everything was going to be OK.  Electing a mummified 1950s Dad for president was just one manifestation of this mentality.  The Marsalises were as much as symptom as they were a cause.  But I believe the same things would have happened, more or less, with or without them.   There were plenty of other well-dressed young men playing more conservative forms of "jazz."

America more prosperous in the early 80s?  Hell no.  Between inflation, the gas shortage crisis and a wave of union vs management conflicts, Cold War malaise, and other issues, America was not prosperous.   The affluence came around 1986-87, as Reaganomics kicked in.  And Reaganomics was a shit poor concept.

I gotta say that I've liked almost nothing that Wayne Shorter did away from Miles. But his playing with Miles was godlike. Not elsewhere, I don't care what anybody says.

Sigh.  Old man yelling at clouds syndrome.

Wayne's quartet of the past two decades is proof positive that he learned a great deal from Miles.  It is also a testament to Wayne's greatness that he applied it in his own way and own terms.  His sidemen are excellent but I have little to no interest in hearing their own projects.  But with Wayne they are transformed.

  3. OK, $2 each on the trayless discs.

The Silvestri box is outstanding.   The Martucci box has some great late 19th c/early 20th c Romantic orchestral music.  The Neveu box contains some great classical violin performances, equal if not better than many of her male contemporaries.

The Jon Irabagon Foxy album is a sleeper.  You will never hear Barry Altschul play like he does here.  Explosive.  It's like someone set him on fire.

I recommend all the Intakt discs, and they are cheap promo copies with mini lp sleeves.

The Getatchew Mekuria discs are all excellent, a really good fusion of ethic jazz with post punk legends the Ex.

Fortunately you're not missing much of anything as only a few instruments rolloff any higher than 10kHz.

This is the number one reason why "high resolution" digital audio is a farcical money making scheme with absolutely no audible benefits.

Unless you are a dog.  Woof!

Stefan - what Type 45 tube amp are you picking up?

It is made by an independent builder who sells his amps on Ebay.  I actually bought it second hand from a guy in California who seems to buy and sell expensive hifi pieces like candy.  Got it for way less than what he bought it for, with high quality tubes and power cable.  I did my homework and checked people's reviews of his amps and he is highly regarded.  The guy I bought it from said it sounded like the famed Yashimoto 45 amp.  With some rare and highly regarded Peacock transformers and Triad chokes. western Electric tubes as well.  I was going to go the Decware or Elekit route until I saw this.  Free shipping too.  I even contacted the maker and told him I was getting the amp and he said if there are any issues I could ship it to him to fix.  His amps have been favorably compared to some of the best.  I know the guy who does the Glow in the Dark audio blog and when I told him about it he had seen the ad and thought I did well, as he knew the builder as well.

For what it's worth, the solid state amp I had ran hot, but it had some serious heat sinks that just made it warm to the touch.  Sold that during the furlough.   The Musical Paradise 301 tube amp I have is fantastic, and doesn't feel hot at all.  Takes all sorts of power tubes, as it is auto bias capabilities.
