  1. The rub of analog technology is that transferring to digital must always be done in real time, ie, play the tape while recording it another format. There is no alternative.

Not true . High speed digitizers are available , at a price , but even if it were true that digitizing had to be done in real-time , how would this be "the rub" ? If you're too busy to listen to a tape as it's being digitized , then you're likely too busy to listen to the resulting digital copy , so why bother with digitization at all ?

I'd love to see one of these "high speed" digitizers. Can you show me one?

Well I could , only then I'd be doing your homework for you <_<

  3. Donald Byrd's "Up with Donald Byrd" on Verve is another and, in my view, better for a Soul fan than "I'm tryin' to get home".

I can't agree with that ; I think a soul fan would have a greater affinity for the gospelish I'm Tryin' To Get Home , than for the AM-radio pop commercialism of Up With Donald Byrd , which is a really weak record in my opinion .

BTW , why isn't this in the Recommendations forum ?

  4. There's a strange error on the Fresh Sound CD , Joe Gordon & Scott LaFaro : West Coast Days . Track 4 is listed as It Could Happen To You , and Richie Kamuca announces it as such , but the tune played is actually the Sonny Rollins tune , Paul's Pal . Some sloppy tape splicing no doubt , but it's pretty peculiar that the error wasn't noticed and that the correct tune wasn't identified , since both are fairly well known tunes .

  5. "With its modern design and popular choice of repertoire, the JAZZ CLUB is not only opened for Jazz fans, but for everyone that loves good music....."

.....Or anyone wanting to own a CD that looks like it came out of a vending machine at Starbucks .

Most Jazz Club CDs reflect the current insane remastering habit of maximizing the dynamic range and EQ compression.

Actually , the loudness problem of recent CDs is a product of minimizing , not maximizing dynamic range . Is it just your subjective impression that JAZZ CLUB CDs are even more compressed than other jazz CDs , or have you actually measured and compared them ? Not that I would buy them either way....

  6. I like LaPorta a lot; if you haven't seen it, pick up his autobiography.

I got to know him a little bit around the year 2000; he still played great.

I asked him whatever happened to Wally Cirillo: "He died from the first Swine Flu vaccine."

That's a real shame . Back when that happened (1977) , Cirillo was only 50 years old . He was still playing and composing , and had recorded with Joe Diorio in Florida .

  7. Woods' brief solo on Gerald Wilson's "Portraits" LP is the high point of that album, but I think the notes in the Mosaic box credit it to someone else.

I hadn't noticed this , but you're right ; Doug Ramsey credits Woods' solo on So What to Teddy Edwards (!) and his solo on Aram , to Joe Maini . Eliot Tiegel's original notes at least mention that Woods is a soloist ( without identifying on which tracks ) .
