  1. Anyone else care to comment on the musical content of this set? Out of the 90 or so responses to this thread, about 5% have to do with the actual music. Who really cares what number set you got? Most people, I'd like to think, buy the sets for the music itself. Not having heard any of this material, myself, I'd like to hear some further opinions regarding the tunes, arrangements, solos, etc. Thanks in advance.

  2. Just listened to Long Drink again. It is Paul Chambers that Jackie's arguing with — you can hear Jackie say "I'm gonna hafta beg you to play ... play Paul, play, play ... "

Now, maybe Webster's the one that tries to calm Jackie down ... I can't tell. Still, it's interesting to try to visualize the six of them there with Rudy behind the controls.

I don't think I would mess around with P.C. I wonder what Jackie was complaining about. Maybe the dope was messing with his brain.

  3. Today, I traded in a bunch of cds and got three Lps. I find the trading route is great: you save shelf space and get "new" albums that you've never heard before. It's also more fun than buying new stuff (ie. sealed). That said, I also purchased a re-issue of CENTRAL PARK NORTH, which actually was a new copy.

  4. I picked up SEVEN STANDARDS, 1985, VOLUME 1 today. AMG gives it a no-so-good review, but I really don't care. Should be interesting to hear how Hank Jones and the fairly "straight-ahead" rhythm section interacts with Braxton.

  5. Am currently listening to the Sonny Stitt/Zoot Sims Cadet Lp, INTER-ACTION, and John Young is the pianist. As soon as I heard his first solo, I knew I'd heard him before (it was on a Von Freeman live album). A very recognizable style, good accompanist, great soloist; he seems to use the whole keyboard. Anyways, there's not much about him on this BB, so I thought a thread would be nice.

BTW, here's AMG's page for Young: John Young

  6. Art Farmer is a heavy cat. I'll admit to not really getting him at first. But once I "got it", I noticed that he has a lyrical quality to his lines that is actually quite deep. STYLINGS OF SILVER features him with Mobley; really looking forward to hearing Art and Hank on the Mobley Mosaic (is it Christmas yet?). Another good sideman appearance is on the BN album with Curtis Fuller (can't remember the title at the moment, it's on the Fuller Mosaic though). I'm slightly embarassed to say that I have zero Farmer-led sessions, but hope to rectify that problem in the near future. He was one hell of a trumpet player, though. Also invented the Flumpet.

  7. Is this better than the first RH Factor CD? I like Hargrove in general and I like funk, but I found the first CD to be a consistent bore.

I'd say it is substantially better, especially the first two tunes (as another poster pointed out). The remaining four songs are not bad either. I've only listened to this one a couple of times, but it's one I'm going to return to often in the near future I think.

  8. Sorry, I'm of not help with regard to your initial request, but I am interested in your experience with your iPod thus far. As mentioned in another thread, I recently purchased an iBook and have been most satisfied with it. I am looking to get an iPod also, probably sometime in the new year. Are they quite easy to use? Do you have one of those cables that connects into your stereo? Have you had any problems with it?

  9. Dan, those are two good choices, I bet you like those!

Me, I was going to ask for a Mosaic set for Xmas, and then Helen asked me "What do you think about getting a lap top, an Apple one, for you sort of for Xmas"? I replied. . . "Not a bad idea. . . " ^_^

I purchased an iBook G4 back in October and it is a marvellous little machine, let me tell you. Wireless internet, iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, etc. Fast, easy-to-use; does everything I ask of it and then some. You're in for a treat, Lon.

  10. Up.  I know which set I'll be getting (see avatar).  If I have some spare dough in the new year, I'm leaning toward either the Roy Eldridge or Sonny Stitt sets (likely Eldridge as it's slightly cheaper and I only have one album of his).

What are fellow Organissimo-ites wishing for this year?

    Pryan.

May I recommend the Eldridge to you? For myself, it has been an almsot endless treasure trove of enjoyment ... and I had quite a few of these sessions on other CDs.

I'm really happy I invested into this set. Besides my Teddy Wilson one, this is top-of-the-heap for me and in constant rotation around here. Mosaic did an excellent job with this one and for my part, I cannot come up with a single reason why one shouldn't own this box! And, the sound is fabulous as well!

    Cheers!

Thanks for the additional "push". Most people seem to dig the Eldridge set A HELL OF A LOT. The fact that I own only SWINGIN' ON THE TOWN, is reason enough to get it, I suppose. Here's hoping the cash is there after X-Mas.
