It seems like an awful waste of time.

Darcy James Argue was posting about the Downbeat Reader's Poll today on Facebook so I checked it out. Does anyone here participate? It was overly long, imo. Why are there 40+ jazz album of the year nominees? The same thing applies to the list of instrumentalists. Has it always been that lengthy?

Chris is a great person but he seems to be a bit melodramatic on these forums. Thanks for the heads-up regarding the documentary.

I have to say I agree with Shipp. I've tried to get into Jarrett but his playing doesn't resonate with me at all.
-
By all accounts, he had many demons. It's a shame really. I tried to meet him in Detroit and he wouldn't have anything to do with me. His bodyguards told me he wouldn't talk to no cracker.
Still love his music and his influence is undeniable. -

I'm sure Mike can sell you one direct. Contact him here or on FB.
It's a great CD. Jake Langley is a bad boy. -
Just call me Nero from now on, Chuck.

Bullshit. The blame the union stuff is a smoke-screen.

The new union busting techniques. Go bankrupt and fire all unionized workers and their pensions go bye bye.
Twinkles suck.

Awesome! Give Ann my best.

That's not a bad idea. It would be cool to track it for real on that organ. Maybe a good excuse to take the wife to Austin, TX this fall.

Eh. This album has its moments for sure, but I think the band was past its creative prime by this point. The experimental edge was almost entirely gone as was Rick Wright's creative input. I'd compare it to some other late 70s prog rock albums like Going for the One and Wind & Wuthering. Nice albums, but not on the level of their earlier work.
WHAT? Wind & Wuthering is a brilliant album. Beautiful writing and lyricism on that record. Ditto for And Then There Were Three... And Duke is probably the most underrated Genesis album of all time (and their last true prog record). Genesis was still making good prog into the early 80s.
But anyway... yeah, I wore out my cassette copy of Animals in middle school. I recently listened to it for the first time in probably 20 years this winter and I forgot how good it is. Dark, yes. Brooding, yes. But I liked the stripped down nature of it.
I saw the recent Roger Water's The Wall tour and it was incredible. That album is amazing just from a mere production standpoint. The themes are a bit overwrought and it is extremely self-indulgent but I still like it.

He must have been a very empathetic individual. I'm sorry for your loss.

I am not comfortable with this being here. It blew up all over FB months ago and frankly I don't feel like this schmuck should have any more exposure.

Just a small vent of frustration:
Had a gig an hour and forty-five minutes away from Lansing in Wyandotte, MI tonight. Work has been slow the last few months, even the national touring work I do, so I'm a bit stretched right now. I took this gig because I enjoy playing with the other musicians but also because I need the money. And the money on this gig was shit to begin with. Gas is $4.29 in Michigan right now and the gig only paid $100. I probably spent $40 in gas at least getting to and from the gig.
Anyway, I'm almost to the gig, flowing with traffic down Southfield Freeway, and I turn right on Jefferson, using my signal. Moments later the flashing lights are behind me. Cop pulls me over. I'm thinking maybe I have a tail light out or something. I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in 6 years or more because I don't speed anymore... used to when I was younger but I got over that shit.
He comes up to the window. License and registration, proof of insurance, all that jive. I'm always friendly and polite to cops. He asks me if I know why he's pulled me over. I tell him honestly no. He said I was going 45 in a 35mph. I said I had no idea what the speed limit was, I was just flowing with traffic, which is true. He looks at my license and asks if I still live in Lansing. I say yes. "What are you doing here?" he asks. Playing a gig in Wyandotte, trying to make a buck.
He goes to his car, comes back and writes me a ticket for "impeding traffic". He's trying to be nice. That ticket means no points on my license, no increase in my insurance. But it also means I cannot fight it and it's a $116 fine. Did I mention the gig only paid $100.I fucking hate that shit. I could've stayed home with my wife and kids and I would've SAVED money.
That's my rant. -
That place will be gone in less than a month, so what does it matter?
Don't bring that shit here.
All are welcome but I will not tolerate old battles being refought over here. This is the final warning. This thread is done. -
Why is this being hashed out here? And what link are you referring to, Tim?

Thanks, everyone. We're at $550 total. I very much appreciate it.

Y'all may have noticed the board was down. Actually my entire server was down because I owed the hosting company $600. Hence the funddrive. So far we've gotten $250. I had to pay the rest of the bill on my own personal credit card, much to the chagrin of my very patient wife in order to get the server turned back on.

My HP battery is not holding as much charge lately either and I keep getting a warning about it. My laptop is only 2 years old. Bummer.
-
I'll stick with Windows 7, which I like a lot. I skipped Vista altogether.
