  1. Played Giant Steps at a blistering tempo tonight at the jam. Believe it or not, but I've never actually played that tune before. Haha!

  2. Hello back pain my old friend. You've come to mess with me again.

  3. The Black Keys sound fucking great on SNL. Nice to hear a band that can actually play on that show.

  4. "Fear is the parent of cruelty." Betrand Russell

  5. Those two records she did with Stevie around the same time as his classic are like the Lost Stevie Wonder albums. Great stuff on there. Haven't heard this before. Thanks!
  6. I'd be more overjoyed if our national food system wasn't wholly corrupt and the main contributing factor for the heart disease, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol issues that plague our population. Then we wouldn't need overpriced drugs in the first place!
  7. The idol worship that shrouds the sports world is fucking stupid. The fact that people can twist their minds enough to defend the indefensible is more proof that we can convince ourselves to believe whatever we want to believe in order to make ourselves feel better. Paterno is a sack of shit for allowing child rape to happen under his watch. So is everyone else involved in the football program, including McQueary. You don't just pass the buck, you call the fucking police. I'm glad the old fuck has cancer. You reap what you sow, motherfucker. I hope he dies a painful death. It still won't be as painful and horrendous as the lives he helped ruin due to his inaction and his love of power, money, and prestige over basic human compassion and protecting children.
  8. Good to know. I'll hold off on upgrading until they work that one out.
  9. I've been using a 12AT7 in my 3300 basically since I bought it in the spring of 2008 and haven't had any issues. As far as damaging the Leslie from changing the tube, just make sure you take your time and put the tube in the right way. And it goes without saying that the Leslie should be off and unplugged.
  10. Playing at Trios in South Bend tonight with organissimo. We start in about an hour!

  11. SOUP! What's your favorite winter soup recipe? Something hearty, thick, that will keep you warm on these cold days?

  12. Tuned one of the most out of tune pianos I've ever run across tonight. The last tuner told the client it was "un-tunable". After three hours, three quick rough tunings, and a fourth final tuning, I can say I conquered that.

  13. If you're in Grand Rapids and you're on Facebook right now, get your butt down to the Wealthy Theater! C'mon, G-Rap. Don't disappoint me. Organissimo takes the stage in about an hour.

  14. Tonight, organissimo and Glenn Brown & Intergalactic Spiral + "exp" at the Wealthy Theater. Show starts at 7:30pm with opener Glean Infusion. All proceeds go to the Wealthy's Sustainability project to ready this historic theater for the next 100 years!

  15. Dear pop songwriters: If you're going to take the cheap way out and use the ubiquitous I - V - VI m - IV chord progression, at least do something interesting with it. Strumming your guitar and whining an insipid, poorly written melody over the top doesn't count.

  16. Tracking with organissimo today in the ol' home studio. Jazz on!

  17. Ah, Herman Cain. Proof positive that business and government are two separate things (for good reasons). And that acumen in one doesn't automatically mean proficiency in the other. Oh, and don't sexually harass people if you want to become president.

  18. It's time for "Guess What Monocultural Food Icon This Is!"

  19. The ubiquitous HLN blarring from every TV in the airport. How do these hosts live with their own banality?

  20. I often wonder if our nation's worship of and preoccupation with sports indirectly leads to the "us vs them" mentality that pervades so much public discourse, especially politically.

  21. Yep, and we can blame Clinton for that one with the 1996 Telecommunications Act. Just goes to show that not everything is black and white (ie all conservatives bad, all liberals good and vice versa). It was / is a horrible decision that allows the conglomeration of media into a few hands and once you control the media you can control the message. The only counterpoint is the rise of the internet, which nobody foresaw (well, Kurzweil did, but he wasn't taken seriously) but that's under attack now, too. And though I don't necessarily agree with thedwork's entire post, it is true that the anger is not aimed at the person who amasses obscene wealth, it's at the system that allows it to happen, a system that was put into place by those with the wealth, to benefit those with the wealth, and maintain the status quo. And that crosses the imaginary party line. And yes, the system is fundamentally unsustainable, just like the fallacy of continually escalating home prices when average wages have stagnated since 1980 was fundamentally unsustainable (something I recognized almost 10 years ago, when I was in my early 20s). If you are even remotely familiar with history, the pitfalls of such a system should be obvious as well as the dire consequences of not dealing with it. Let them eat McDonalds.
  22. Heading home on the red-eye in a few hours. So long, West Coast. It's been real. See you in 2012.

  23. One more gig with the Janiva Magness band for 2011. Tonight at the Tempe Center For The Arts!

  24. On to Tucson, AZ today for a show at Plaza Palamino. Two shows with Janiva left this year!

  25. Off to LA this morning. Two more shows with Janiva and then I'm home for the rest of the year. Looking forward to playing with the band this weekend and then having time to finish up my own projects this winter.
