  1. This is definitely worth picking up, even if you already have the studio material--the live material is great, and the DVD soundies and shorts are a real treat. It's budget-priced, so you can probably find it for $8 or $9 if you look around online... although I'm wondering on what grounds Lasker withheld some of this material from the red RCA box (he states that he purchased some of the 1941 broadcasts in 1996). In any case, I've been listening/viewing with great pleasure today.

I heartily agree and have been enjoying this one also - by the way the Coleman Hawkins cd/dvd is also a gem! :tup

  2. On ebay, lp sets don't get as much as they used to.  People probably have less disposable cash than they used to.

I think the sellers are increasing (people are passing away and others are getting rid of their LP collections) and the buyers (the older buyers are passing away and younger folks are mainly buying CDs) are decreasing.

I got a mint copy on ebay almost two years ago for 225 with shipping, 180 is a very good price in my opinion. I really think it comes down to supply and demand, like most things on ebay. Anyway, nice score on a terrific set! B-)

  3. Time to chime in with some recent finds:

"Daddy Plays The Horn" Dexter Gordon - the original on Bethlehem deep groove laurel-leaves label (cover is vg++, record is at least vg++)! Paid a hundred bucks for this, but I consider that a very good deal!

"Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries" Howard McGhee - original Bethlehem pressing like the above, but this one is stone mint-, cover & vinyl. Paid $25, a steal.

"House Warmin'" another by Howard McGhee (and the mysterious Blazers-anyone know who they were?)-an absolutely nm-condition blue label Argo first pressing for $20!

    :D

  4. I just called Mosaic and the distortion is bad on all Disc 7s.  They've notified the manufacturer and they're going to replace them all when they get them in.

So I guess we've got another "collector's item" on our hands, though anyone that would pass the damaged disk off to somebody else is lower than a rattlesnake's belly.

Too bad, I actually planned on starting with Take a Number, even if the concept is a bit gimmicky. But there is plenty else to delve into while waiting for the replacement disk.

Yep, disc 7 is definitely a bummer! Since it's Mosaic, I'm not even gonna worry about it-they'll fix it. :(

  5. I wish you luck also, but have to agree with Wolff on this one. Does anyone know how many lp sets were issued of later Mosaics like Blue Mitchell or Mobley? I have the Mitchell on lp and have rarely seen another for sale (there is one currently on Ebay-it will be interesting to see what it goes for). There can't be nearly as many of these lp sets out there as cds, I got the Horace Parlan on lp a couple of years ago when it was last chance yet cd is still in print. With some of the earlier sets, like Shorty Rogers, it would seem fewer cds were issued.

  6. The two I've heard (True Blue & The Congregation) sounded just fine, IMHO. The stereo True Blue is closer to mono, much less separation. Nothing I heard made me think "digital" in regards to the sound quality. Nice heavy vinyl pressings, and they have done a terrific job with the covers on these too. On the other hand, I have yet to hear a Blue Note reissue from anyone that beats the earlier Japanese King lps.
