I will probably get this set. Time Out of course is a classic, and since I am not very familiar with the other 4 of the Time records this is a good way to get them. I think I agree with your comments on the familiarity of Time Out when heard coming from the 90s instead of when it originally came out; it's still a great listen. I recently picked up Brubeck's record from Starbucks in Manhattan, and although it isn't earth shattering it is still great music, and listening to that record made me interested in seeking out more of his music
I also picked up the Starbucks disc-Dave Brubeck and his group still sound great, IMHO. I particularly like Bobby Militello's sound on that one-not at all like Desmond. Brubeck also turned in a nice bit with Jay McShann in the Clint Eastwood-directed "Piano Blues" documentary, the last film in the Martin Scorsese blues series. He's definitely a jazz icon, and I will most likely get this new set. "Time Out" and "Something Else" were the albums that got me interested in jazz.

Thanks guys! A preliminary search turned up the Jazz Time disc-looks to be still in print. The "Sonny, Sweets & Jaws" cd may be a bit harder to find, but I'll be looking for it.

Now that the test is done, I'm playing Jim's disc for pure enjoyment and I have to add my praise for the Higgins track (#6)! This guy is amazing-another artist I was not familiar with (but will be now).

AHHH, one of my favorite Mosaics, I had to wait a couple of years to find a "reasonably" priced vinyl version (as told in a previous thread)! Hard to believe it didn't sell-nice find. B)

I like this box also-and if you want a sampler of these sessions it's called "Art Standards" (Galaxy CD). It has four of the tracks with Stitt and the sound is great. Then you will definitely want the box...

HMMM.....it is entirely possible to be a collector and love the music too, I've been doing both for quite a few years now! Sometimes being a collector makes you love the music even more-for example, I'm still amazed at how much better certain early pressings sound compared to cds and reissues. A recent aquisition of an original mono copy of "Idle Moments" is a perfect case in point. I would not have sought this copy out (or paid more than 10 bucks for it) if I was not a collector.

In addition to "Abilene", Hamilton IV had a pretty big crossover hit with his infamous "A Rose And A Baby Ruth" back in the day (a classic "teen" ballad).
Thanks again for the great disc Jim, this was a blast! I knew I was in trouble when I realized that Sarah Vaughn was the 1st artist I instantly recognized! I'm kicking myself for not getting the Frank Strozier-I have that lp (though I haven't played it in years). Lem Winchester is one cat I will check out as a result of this test-and now I'll have to get the Morgan VJ Mosaic which I have postponed a few times. $$$

The Hank Mobley 200gm does indeed sound great. However, the original mono Blue Train just beats the hell out of any reissue I've ever heard! I recently added a mint mono 1st pressing of Idle Moments to my collection - it is like hearing it for the first time, just incredible (and I thought the RVG cd was pretty damn good)!!! To me, many of the Blue Notes do sound better in mono. One cool thing about those Classic reissues is that some are offered in "comparison packs" where you get both stereo & mono versions. Costs more, of course, but might be worth it for something you really like.

Actually, Van has done some good things since his great albums of the 60's & 70's - ever heard the Mose Allison tribute he did a few years ago with Georgie Fame on Verve? Then there is Down The Road, The Healing Game, Back On Top. He's still got it, IMHO.

Among the very few things by Quill I own, there is a very good session he co-led with Dick Sherman recorded for Dawn. I don't know the date, but it might be 1956.
Line up is Quill as, Sherman t, Dick Katz p, Teddy Kotick b, Art Taylor d.
This date (5 tunes, around 20 minutes) was released as the A side of "Jazzville '56". It's currently available from freshsoundrecords.com on a 2CD sampler featuring most of the four Jazzville albums (what's not on this one is some Quinichette stuff included on Quinichette's own Dawn/Blue Moon/Freshsound CD).

Quill also plays on several tracks on another Dawn lp "Message From Garcia" led by the seemingly forgotten guitarist Dick Garcia. Great stuff on those Dawn sessions...

How about some great finds in vinyl? I'll start:
a really mint copy of Milt Jackson/Sonny Stitt "In The Beginning" on Galaxy! This baby is like unplayed and contains late 1940's tracks recorded in Detroit-24.95 at a used record store and worth it!
also by Sonny Stitt-a near mint copy of "Tune Up" on Cobblestone from the same store for $6.00. I probably don't need to point out that this is maybe the best thing he ever did...
a vg++/nm copy of Willis Jackson's "Cool Gator" lp on Prestige (yellow Bergenfield label). Way cool lp and kind of rare too-25 bucks from a private party.
Any other finds out there?

I also have had no problems with the rice paper sleeves, but for my rarest and most treasured lps (like that mint 1st pressing of Roll Call) I use the no-longer-available laser disc sleeves that used to be sold at a local used record store. I bought a bunch when I found out they were being discontinued. These are actually made of something very similar to rice paper reinforced with a stiffer paper (that does not come into contact with the vinyl). I'm pretty sure you can still get something very similar from audiophile vinyl suppliers. As for the covers, plastic sleeves are a must but the resealable Japanese outers (mylar?) are the best IMHO. These you can get from Bags Unlimited & elsewhere (pick up a copy of Discoveries or Goldmine for competetive pricing on quantities). Long live vinyl!

Boy, am I stumped on most of these! Lots of latin rhythms-not my strong suit, but let me say right here I really like most of these and would love to hear more! OK, here are my guesses/comments:
1. I know this samba, I've heard versions of it by Desmond & Hall among others-but I don't know who this is. Great piano (as on a lot of these tracks).
2. "Taking A Chance On Love", right? I love the ringing vibes, could be Milt Jackson but I'm not at all sure...is it Oscar Peterson on piano?
3. I really got into this one, it's not Miles or Morgan on trumpet but has elements of both-Eddie Henderson maybe.
4. Another samba-don't know who this is...
5. This I really dig-is that Benny Golson on tenor? Paul Chambers on that bowed bass solo? I should know this one....
6. I picked up on the "Work Song" quote, but not at all sure who this is-could it be Junior Mance? Great arrangement, another piano I'd like to hear more of.
7. Is this Jim Hall? Sounds like him...
8. It's Stan Getz or someone doing a damn good impersonation! Not his best stuff if it is indeed Getz.
9. Stumped again-could be Cecil Payne on bari...
10. I love the chording but not at all sure who this is-Joe Pass maybe?
11. Another great piano and bass, but no guess on this one...
12. I like this a lot, but not at all sure who it is...
13. A Monk tune, great drummer on this one! Is this Roy Haynes? John Scofield on guitar? I can get into this...
14. Sarah Vaughan (I think). I'm not much on vocals...
15. Another one I don't have a clue about-I have heard Jimmy Heath sound like this on soprano-but I bet it aint Jimmy!
16. Another pianist I can't name! I should know this tune-can't think of the name & it's buggin' me...beautiful piano.
This was a most enjoyable introduction to the Blindfold Test! This disc will get some play here for sure. VERY challenging, and a great way to spend a Sunday when the football is boring! Thanks Jim-can't wait to see the answers.

Just one more comment to those who have some of this material on previous releases: this is absolutely the best sound by a lot! Both the small group and early orchestra recordings are a revelation-this is essential, IMHO.

Take the HAMILTON set, folks. It is one of the most underrated Mosaic sets, IMO!!!

If you're going to make your own cleaning solution make sure you use denatured alcohol to mix with distilled h2o-denatured is pure and will not damage your vinyl (of course you must never use alcohol on 78's, as it destroys shellac!). You can get a pint of denatured at any drugstore for about $6, and this will make a LOT of cleaner. Another great item for really grungey lps is the record cleaning sponge that Bags Unlimited sells-does not scratch 'em!
