  2. Jazz Messengers is offering "Drum Is A Woman" on a Jazz Track label (?). Is Definitive/Absolute emporium already ripping off the Epic France reissue?

    :o

    http://www.jazzmessengers.com/ProductInfo.asp?ref=117191

It should however be noted that the Jazz Track version has a bonus track, Pomegranate, from 7 March 1957. It's one of Duke's many non-album tracks from the 1956-62 Columbia period, and was only released many years later on a French CBS set.

The "Andorrans" seem to start a new label every month. Now it's Jazz Track; other very recent labels include Jazz Collectors, Fine And Mellow and Jazz Beat.

On the Jazz Beat label we also have The Complete Ellington Indigos. In addition to the original album there are eight bonus tracks, two non-album tracks and six alternate takes, expanding the CD to 79 miniutes. This also just came out in in the Jazz Originals series, but without the bonus tracks.

    117193.jpg

It wouldn't surprise me if we soon would see a Such Sweet Thunder release from them, but with the correct take of Up And Down, Up And Down (Schaap managed to include the wrong take on the official CD).

  3. Kevin,

Could you ask Michael for more info about the Silver Newport date (or maybe I'll call him eventually)?

I assume it is from the VOA collection at the Library of Congress (which also yielded the Monk/Trane). They have a bunch of the Newport stuff.

The reason I asked is that I told him about some Blakey dates from that archive, but I don't know if he ever followed up.

Bertrand, the liner notes were posted by Kevin in another thread. Although Cuscuna first heard the Silver at Newport session at the Library of Congress, the CD is actually mastered from tapes found in the Columbia vaults and in stereo! Columbia producer George Avakian supervised the recording of the entire Newport festival that year. Columbia albums from Newport 1958 by Ellington, Miles and Brubeck come to mind, but it's interesting that more has been lying unissued there the entire time (what else, one wonders?).

From Newport 1959 a professional stereo recording exists of the Ellington band, but it only came out in 1989 on an EmArcy CD. What label recorded it originally? Mercury recorded the Quincy Jones orchestra at Newport in 1961, but were other sets recorded professionally too? If not, there is always the possibility of VOA mono tapes at the Library of Congress, as you mention. Cuscuna mentions that he was auditioning several tapes at the LoC, so who knows, maybe Blakey was among them?

  4. Wayne Shorter – The Soothsayer

Hopefully with that annoying shrill-ness taken out of the sound?

But it was only earlier copies of The Soothsayer that were affected, right? This was discussed many years ago, probably on the old BNBB. I know my copy doesn't have any sound problems.

Not only "discussed" on the old BNBB, but it was our discovery of that tape distortion caused Blue Note to pull the master tape back out and re-do the CD to fix that nastiness. It was too bad that they never pulled the original mucked up discs. I bet I bought 3 copies of it before I got one that was "fixed". That was back in the days when the BN board was doing its thing to help BN succeed.

Cor blimey! :) I didn't remember that! Do you remember what year that was approximately? The CD came out already in 1990 and the BNBB didn't start until 1999, so the defective version must have been out there for an awfully long time. I think I remember some early prehistoric forum software on the Blue Note site (1997-99?), but I only occasionally lurked at that time. Does anyone else remember it?

I think the BNBB as we knew it started in Spring 1999. In August 1999 I made my first post and it was a question about - of all things - Louis Smith!

FWIW, Organissimo.org has taken over from that old BN board as the place to get the word to and from Blue Note for many years now. Another reason to be thankful to Jim and the guys.

Yes, I view this as a direct continuation of the BNBB, since it was more or less the same people coming over here when the BNBB was closing. A few didn't. Hardbop comes to mind.

  5. The BN take numbers are a bit unusual in that they cover all tunes of the sessions, so in the case of the Cornbread session we get:

    Lee Morgan Sextet

Lee Morgan (tp) Jackie McLean (as -2/4) Hank Mobley (ts) Herbie Hancock (p) Larry Ridley (b) Billy Higgins (d)

Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, September 18, 1965

    1. 1651 tk.1 Ceora Blue Note BLP 4222, BN-LA 224-G

    2. 1652 tk.2 Our Man Higgins Blue Note BLP 4222

    3. 1653 tk.6 Most Like Lee -

    4. 1654 tk.12 Cornbread Blue Note 45-1930, BLP 4222

    5. 1655 tk.15 Ill Wind Blue Note BLP 4222

So if the master take was the last attempt at each tune, there should be six takes of Cornbread. As JSngry says there will likely be many false starts and breakdowns among them. Cuscuna sometimes add alternate takes to CD reissues when he deems the quality good enough, but there may very well be complete takes he hasn't included because he doesn't deem them worthy of release. He has after all been unwilling to release unissued master takes from certain sessions, just because he personally doesn't like them.

  6. Just one thing "Chet Baker Sings" is still the old CD only, older than "The Best of Chet Baker Sings", no?

It's actually quite a bit newer. The Best Of came out in 1989, and Chet Baker Sings in 1998. Thus I suppose the latter has better remastering.

same for the 1956 Baker/Freeman quartet re-encounter. That one also has only seen one US CD release, hasn't it?

    Yes.

  7. From the blog:

"This concert has been recorded, but never released on CD as far as I know."

It has come out on CD twice. The first CD issue was on the Celluloid label and is now OOP. Then in 2005 it came out on a Lone Hill Jazz CD (probably a straight rip of the Celluloid CD):

    519W829MB4L._SS500_.jpg

  8. Art Farmer – Brass Shout (includes Aztec Suite)

Hmm. Hasn't Lonehill (or is it Gambit?) done a 'release' of this quite recently?

Yes, Gambit. It came out just a year or so ago. Some will have picked up that Gambit version obviously, but on the other hand Blue Note's selling point will be that the official release has better sound. If the release dates had been reversed, the Andorrans could just have ripped the BN CD.

Btw, I think Brass Shout has been out on a Japanese CD. I'm not aware of a previous CD reissue of Aztec Suite (other than the Gambit release).

  9. Wayne Shorter – The Soothsayer

Hopefully with that annoying shrill-ness taken out of the sound?

Looking forward to those 3 bonus tracks on the 'Head On'. :excited:

But it was only earlier copies of The Soothsayer that were affected, right? This was discussed many years ago, probably on the old BNBB. I know my copy doesn't have any sound problems.

As for the Head On bonus tracks, I suppose they are the three unissued tracks from the same sessions:

Bobby Hutcherson - Harold Land Band

Oscar Brashear (tp, flh) George Bohanon, Louis Spears (tb) Fred Jackson (picc) Harold Land (ts, fl) Delbert Hill, Charles Owens, Herman Riley, Ernie Watts (reeds) Bobby Hutcherson (vib, mar) Todd Cochran (p, arr) James Leary III (b) Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, Nesbert "Stix" Hooper, Woody Theus (d) Warren Bryant (cga, bgo) Robert Jenkins (unknown inst.) Donald Smith (vo)

Poppi Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA, July 2, 1971

    Togo Land Blue Note unissued

    Jonathan -

Bobby Hutcherson - Harold Land Band

Poppi Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA, July 3, 1971

    Hey Harold unissued

but there are also unissued Hutcherson tracks from later that year:

    Bobby Hutcherson Band

Blue Mitchell (tp) Thurman Green (tb) Harold Land (ts) Bobby Hutcherson (vib) Reggie Andrews, Clarence McDonald (key) Arthur Adams, Cornell Dupree (g) Chuck Rainey (el-b) Stix Hooper (d) King Errison (cga, bgo)

    (tk.6) Workin' On A Groovy Thing -

    * Various Artists - Deep Blue (Blue Note CDP 7243 5 21152-2)

    Bobby Hutcherson Band

Mike Deasy (g) Arthur Lewis (unknown inst.) replaces Dupree, Rainey

    A&R Studios, NYC, December 22, 1971

    (tk.6) Family Affair unissued

    (tk.4) Brother Rap Blue Note [E] B1 97158

    (tk.8) Brown Eyed Woman unissued

    * Various Artists - Blue Juice, Vol. 2 (Blue Note [E] B1 97158)

I wasn't even aware of these latter tracks. Maybe they will be bonus tracks to the ensuing album Natural Illusions, if it ever is reissued.

  10. Baby Grand!!! Baby Grand!!! Baby Grand!!!

I wonder if there'll be bonus tracks? There are lots of unissued tracks listed as rejected in the discography, including 3 untitled blues (surely ONE of them must be a blinder?) and "Tunisia", "Joy spring" (now that would be an interesting one) and "Red sails in the sunset" (would love to hear how he did that one).

    MG

I'm going from memory here, but I think we were informed some time ago that unlike in the case of the Smalls' Paradise sessions, there is no surviving extra material from the Baby Grand gig. So what was originally released (which also has been out on TOCJs) is all we will get. Another case like that is Stanley Turrentine's Up At Minton's session with Grant Green. Lots of unissued material listed in the discographies, but no tapes to be found.

  11. Louis Smith – Smithville (first time in stereo with two bonus tracks)

    :excited::party:

First RVG in a long while I've been interested in getting. I have the mono TOCJ without bonus tracks, and this is a given upgrade. Usually I already have what has been RVG'd and don't want to play the upgrade game. I'm all over the Connoisseurs, though.

Smart move from Cuscuna to release both Louis Smiths months after the Silver Newport CD with Smith on trumpet has come out. That release will hopefully pique many listeners' interest in seeking out more recordings by this brilliant trumpeter.

In any case: Thanks, Kevin, for posting the lists. With four non-BN albums among the Connoisseurs, this year's offerings seem a bit more varied than usual. If Cuscuna wants to, there should be quite a bit more non-BN material to release in future Connoisseur batches (if there will be any).

  12. The article seems to suggest that the reason these artists are killed by gangs might be that their music has been used as soundtrack in videos posted on the Internet of gang members being tortured and executed by rivalling gangs. In other words, the musicians/singers themselves may have nothing to do with it whatsoever.

What a cruel fate if so, to be tortured and murdered because some gang used your music in a video.

  13. I have the "Very Best of Chet Bakers Sings" album which as far as I know contains all that's on "Sings & Plays"

and what about the missing material from "The Very Best of Chet Baker Sings"? Was that the original "Chet Baker Sings" album which is entierly on "Very Best of Sings" and is still around in its old CD incarnation? [...] And where is the strings date from "Grey December"? Has it gone lost from the new reissues?

You’re confusing the hell out of me, king ubu! ;) The compilation The Best Of Chet Baker Sings includes all material from Chet Baker Sings, and all from Chet Baker Sings And Plays except the strings session which instead ended up on the Grey December CD. Since both Sings and Sings And Plays now have been reissued on CD with original cover art and track order, all relevant material can be found on those CDs. In other words, the strings session is back where it originally was, on Sings And Plays. Hope that clears it up.

The The Route CD includes three non-Pepper tracks. One is a Baker feature, one is a Kamuca feature, and one is a trio performance featuring pianist Pete Jolly. You get the entire session on that CD.

Then, as long as we are talking about the 1952-57 Pacific Jazz/World Pacific recordings, there are of course also Theme Music From ”The James Dean Story”, Embraceable You, and the three 1953-54 live CDs, the earliest of which includes the original Jazz At Ann Arbor album, but also another session.

Yes, this was a way for Blue Note to sell the same material again, but at the same time I must say that I much prefer the new incarnations: original albums with bonus material at the end when available. I guess I'm one of those who simply prefer the original album feeling.
