Well, he's a not a bad player for one thing. But given the inevitable tension that would likely be generated by the other personalities on the date, it was good to have at least one with a relatively calm demeanor.

Thanks! I think I have (or had) that Ellington recording. Sometimes I regret getting rid of so many of my LP's. But sadly, necessary. That's a great Flanagan CD, too. Up next:

Yep. Perhaps my desert island Ellington recording. I think the tension between Ray Nance and Cootie Williams helped spark the band to great heights. Of course, they couldn't co-exist in the same section (let alone the same band) for more than a couple of years. I've only had the original 2 LP set and the 2 CD reissue of same. Missed this one with the 10 extra tracks. Must look into that. Now: I know some people have expressed reservations about this one, but I really enjoy it.
