  1. I agree, jazzbo. Your comment prompted me to pull this CD off the shelf: Russ Freeman & Shelly Manne - One on One (Contemporary, rec. 1982)
  2. I agree. It's a potent image.
  3. More Illinois Jacquet:
  4. NP: Illinois Jacquet - S/T (Jazz Reactivation) with Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, Wendell Marshall, Ray Lucas, and Willie Rodriguez U.K. reissue of Jacquet's Desert Winds (Argo, 1964)
  5. Giving this LP another spin: Billy Hart - Rah (Gramavision, 1988)
  6. Long, busy workday. ... Now, some music. Jim Pepper - Comin' and Goin' (Europa, 1983)
  7. John Hicks - S/T (Evidence; originally Theresa) with Bobby Hutcherson & Walter Booker
  8. Thanks for the recommendation, Gheorghe. I've not heard that one, but Konitz was a remarkably consistent performer throughout his life. So I can imagine that would be very good indeed.
  9. Two by Lee Konitz: and
  10. Albert Dailey - Textures (Muse, 1981) and Trilok Gurtu - "Usfret" (CMP, 1988)
  11. More Freddie Hubbard:
  12. Kirk Lightsey Trio featuring Freddie Hubbard - Temptation (Timeless, rec. 1987) Yessir! You're correct on both counts. Great record!
  13. Two alto sax masters: and
  14. cliff, Thanks for sharing that ECM article by Ted Gioia. I'm not particularly drawn to much of the music that Eicher's label has released -- but you've gotta give props to the guy for sticking to his vision. He's been doing it for a LONG time. ... Also, the joke that ECM stands for "excessively cerebral music" made me laugh. Hadn't heard that one before.
  15. Stanley Turrentine - Use the Stairs (Fantasy, 1980) with Wade Marcus arrangements Mr. T's last record for Fantasy
  16. Listening to House of David from this set:
  17. NP: McCoy Tyner - Just Feelin' (Palo Alto Jazz, 1985) with Avery Sharpe (b), Louis Hayes (d), and on two cuts Babatunde (perc)
  18. Ah, I see. Then I suppose I've been unaware of its presence. There's always more to discover.
  19. Funky electric avant-country blues was a thing in the 80s.
  20. I think graphics are very "1980s." Not necessarily terrible or great. Just representative of the time. IMO. I didn't realize it was downbeat's critic's choice for album of the year until it came up recently on the "Favorite 1980s Albums" thread. I dig the record. It's interesting. But no way I'd choose any Various Artists record as my album of the year. ... Then again, no one asked me to vote.
  21. Now on my 'table: Billy Hart - Rah (Gramavision, 1988)
