  1. Sonny Rollins - Plays G-Man (Milestone, 1986)
  2. Warne Marsh - All Music (Nessa, 1976) Ooooooooooooooohh yeah.
  3. You cannot go wrong with the Steve Lacy! I'm especially partial to the Solo, Duo & Trio set. It includes two marvelous duo records with Mal Waldron -- plus The Window, a trio record with Jean-Jacques Avenel and Oliver Jackson. It's a desert-island disc for this listener. FWIW, I dig Dave Douglas. But I haven't heard any of the music in that set.
  4. Warne Marsh - Warne Out (Interplay, 1977) with Jim Hughart (b) and Nick Ceroli (d) This whole LP is terrific, but the version of "Lennie's Pennies" that closes out Side 1 . . . Whoa!
  5. John Scofield - Who's Who (Novus, 1979) and Duke Jordan Trio - Change a Pace (SteepleChase, 1979)
  6. Billy Harper - Soran-Bushi, B.H. (Denon, 1978)
  7. More from this quartet: These guys sound like a band -- not just four guys playing together. A distinctive, elliptical sound; it comes at you sideways.
  8. I love Murray's duet with Ed Blackwell that closes this album. Just wish it was longer!
  9. with Kenny Wheeler
  10. Clare Fischer Orchestra - America the Beauiful (Discovery) This is Fischer's "easy-listening" LP, recorded in '67 and originally released on Columbia. I recently found it in a record store dollar bin, and I'm giving it a first spin right now. ... I suppose the arrangements are more interesting than your run-of-the-mill E-Z listening record, but I prefer Fischer's work in the Latin & jazz genres.
  11. On the way home from work: Remarkably assured second record. With Joe Henderson.
  12. Oh. I wasn't aware. BTW: That Stone Alliance disc looks interesting. Have you heard their self-titled debut? Very good stuff. NP: Ravi Coltrane - From the Round Box (RCA, 2000)

    Kenny Burrell

Strange and sad, any way you slice it.
  14. I second that recommendation.
  15. Anthony Braxton - Five Pieces 1975 (Arista) Powerfully soulful music (of a different sort ).
  16. James Moody - Return from Overbrook (Chess) Compiles two Argo LPs originally released as The Last Train from Overbrook (1958) and Flute 'n the Blues (1956). Powerfully soulful music.
  17. Scott Colley - The Magic Line (Arabesque) trio with Chris Potter & Bill Stewart For the decade or so that Arabesque was in the jazz game, they released some outstanding music.
  18. The interview with Ethan Iverson is very interesting, well worth a read. I'm REALLY looking forward to reading Mark's book. I got my shipping notification yesterday.
  19. John Hicks, people! JOHN HICKS!!! This is a new-to-me CD that I snagged from Ken Dryden's WUTC CD sell-off. Thanks Ken!
  20. Both of those are terrific, IMO.
