Anyone pick this up today, or plan on picking this one up? Its live at the Village Vanguard, and it looks like it has potential. Post your feedback here!

Try hearing the Sonny Clark Trio's version on the RVG of the same name. Very nice!

I saw the band last December here in Chicago, only difference is that Christian McBride was on bass rather than Dave Holland. You'll have a great time!! What a fantastic band....
-
If you like "Water is Wide", definitely pick up its companion "Hyperion with Higgins". It has the same great group interplay, but its a little more upbeat with some terrific compositions by Lloyd. Highly recommended.

AfricaBrass, I'm hip to the downloading thing as well! For a while, back in college when all I was into was jambands, I was trading CD-R's of shows from the original audience taper sources. When I discovered .shn, that made everything so much easker. I did that for a while, back when it was really young and you would download shows off of people's small servers. But now, its caught on and they have all those websites that you mentioned...and then some. It truely is a nice aspect of not only the Dead, but other jambands as well. Now, if I could have only taped that Tom Harrell Quintet show I saw last night!!!!

Right on, scottb. Hundred Year Hall is one of my favorites as well. That was the second Dead disc I ever bought after Dozin at the Knick.

To help share the flaming with you, AfricaBrass, I really don't like ANY of the Dead's studio albums. The production on them just doesn't do it for me. I probably have about 7 dead albums (all live, multi-disc albums), about 15 different Dicks Picks Volumes and a few shows burned on CD-R. Basically, my entire Dead collection is live stuff, except for the studio tracks on the "So Many Roads" box set. I think the Dead are a live band, and that's really the only way I enjoy hearing them. I love "Althea" too.....the version on Dick's Picks 6!!

These are just some of the discs I got at this used CD store located by my new job: John Coltrane "Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings" Matthew Shipp "Equilibrium" Mulgrew Miller "Hand in Hand" Eric Alexander "The First Milestone" Brandford Marsails "Trio Jeepy" Jackie McLean "Destination Out" Terrance Blanchard "Wandering Moon" Wynton Marsalis "J Mood" Brandford Marsalis "The Dark Keys" Dave Douglas "Soul on Soul" Kenny Garrett "Persuance" PLUS, I ordered the Sonny Rollins "Freelance Years" box set, the Sonny Rollins "Complete RCA/Victor Recordings" box set, and four Mosaics: Stanley Turrentine, Blue Mitchell, Johnny Hodges small groups, and J.J. Johnson. After being unemployed for about a year, I figure I deserve to have some fun. I love having a job!!

by the way....I know this was released a while back. I'm refering to the new, remastered version. Thanks!

I've been hearing bits and pieces of info about this one for a while now. Does anyone know if they are planning on releasing this set ever? If so, does anyone know when? Gotta start setting aside a budget for that one!

Unsolved Mysteries was one of my favorite shows growing up. He will be missed. RIP my friend.....

Excellent....thanks jazzbo and David!! That's what I figured it was...just wanted to be sure. What a great sounding set regardless!

Good morning everyone.... I recently picked up at a used CD store a copy of Coltrane's "Heavyweight Champion: The complete Atlantic Recordings". Upon listening to it, I noticed that some of the songs have a soft "hiss" sound in the background throughout the duration of the song. What my question is.....do any of you who own this box set experience the same thing? Is this part of the box set's remastering? Or could my problem be my CDs in particular? Its not too bothersome, but its seems that with modern remastering, that this doesn't really happen anymore in most cases, which is why I'm wondering if this is the way the set is, or if I have a defective copy? If anyone could offer any advice, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.

When an artist was under contract to another record company, alot of times their names became the "property" of the record company for the duration of their contract. This prevented them from using their real names when recording for a different label as a sideman or whatever. A good example is when "Jazz At Massey Hall" was released, Charlie Parker was listed as "Charlie Chan".

I also recommend Complete Blue Hour. Very nice for when you're up late at night, just chillin'.

I bought Rough N Tumble about two weeks ago, and I love it! Some of the best soulful jazz I've ever heard. The best part is hearing McCoy Tyner flip into Ray Charles mode! Great Album......highly recommended.

If anyone is from or lives remotely near Chicago, we are in for some REAL treats these next twelve months! The Symphony Center has announced their jazz lineup for the next year. Ornette Coleman is coming in September. The following months will see Dave Brubek, Charles Lloyd Qunitet, John Scofield "Real Jazz" trio with the Brad Meldhau trio, Hank Jones f/Clark Terry & Joe Lovano, the Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Cassandra Wilson. I think I'm missing a couple as well. But the big one is.....not one....but TWO nights with Herbie Hancock next April! The first Friday will be the Herbie Hancock Quartet with very special guest Wayne Shorter!! And the following Friday, Herbie will perform a trio concert with what may possibly be the best rhythm duo alive today - Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette! Along with a strong lineup for this year's Jazz Fest, Chicago is definitely a good place to be livin'!! B)

Thank you all for the feedback! It's good to know that I made some wise choices with the discs, since I haven't heard hardly any of the music in the sets, nor have I ever purchased a Mosaic box set!

DOZIN' AT THE KNICK!!!!! Thanks AfricaBrass!!!! I can't believe I forgot to mention the CD that turned me on to the Dead! That one is HOT!!! That Mud Love Buddy Jam.......wow......
-
Thanks AfricaBrass! Good to see another Deadhead on the board as well! Although jazz is my one true love, I've been a fan of the Dead for about 7 years, and they come in a close second.

Pardon my manners...... I'm Sal from Chicago, and I was a semi-regular presence on the BNBB (about a post a day or so on average) for about six months before the mass exodus. Since the closing of the board, I've been a regular presence on the AAJ board, and came across the link to this board not too long ago. I'm a financial analyst by day, jazz drumming student by night, and jazz freak 24/7. Since I finally got a regular full time job after almost a year of unemployment, and spend many days not doing anything but surfing the net, you'll be hearing more from me! Thanks for the info on the Blue Mitchell set, Rooster Ties. About how long does it take to ship?

Matthew, Another one I would highly recommend to you is a double CD live release called "Without A Net". It sounds like alot of the music that is being recommended to you is some of their older stuff, which is without a doubt their best. But they did have thier moments in the late eighties/early nineties, and I think "Without a Net" is one of their best from that period. Its availiable in most stores for the price of a single CD, the sound is great, and the Dead are on fire! Definitely check it out.

Hey everyone, I'm glad I finally found this board! Its good to see so many familiar faces again. For my first post, I wanted to ask your opinions on three Mosaic sets I purchased yesterday. I picked up the Stanley Turrentine set, the Blue Mitchell set, and the Johnny Hodges small groups set. Does anyone have these? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts about them. I'm so excited to get them in the mail. About how long does Mosaic take to ship?? I've never ordered from them before. Also, I was planning on making my next purchse the J.J. Johnson set. Let me know what you all think! Sal
