Direct-to-disc recording refers to sound recording methods that bypass the use of magnetic tape recording and record audio directly onto analog disc masters.

    So no opportunity for mixing...

It still runs through a mixer of some kind though surely. Just means it has to be mixed in real time (and there's obviously no opportunity to go back and edit takes).

  2. Gutted to learn of this today. I came to his music probably a lot later than many board members but I'm so glad I had the opportunity to see him play so many times in London over the past decade - just a joy to behold. Thank you Barry.

    A life very well lived.

  3. Is this strictly an improv thread or improv and jazz? A few more suggestions from the UK:

More mainstream - Nérija, Seed Ensemble, Kokoroko (all of whom share band members)

More improvy - Cath Roberts, Hannah Marshall, Ute Kanngeisser, Sue Lynch, Charlotte Keeffe, Sylvia Hallett, Angharad Davies

One memory implanted in my mind is of him coming through the main door into the gig with a couple of Tesco carrier bags. Surreal. Also the beaming face of Steve Winwood stood next to me digging Lonnie’s playing.

That's great! I was just thinking at the weekend how he was one of the greats I hadn't managed to catch yet...
