  1. Actually I am thinking of buying the Earl Hines and James P. Johnson Mosaic boxes. I am moving and sold all of my vinyl and now I don't have any of their music. I used to have the Time-Life Giants of Jazz box sets for these two guys and they were pretty darn good. Does anyone else have these Mosaic boxes and if so, how are they? I know ASV Living Era have compilations that are supposed to be good but they are a lot less music. I would like to feature their music on my Monday night "early jazz" show on my internet radio station.
  2. I agree! I wish I could find "Tanuki's Night Out" on CD too.
  3. I found a used copy of the The Complete Atlantic Studio Recordings of The Modern Jazz Quartet 1956-64! I can't wait to sink my teeth into it!!!
  4. A couple of weeks ago my wife and I caught the Martha Kato Ensemble at Blues Alley in DC. I was not familiar with her music but as is often this case when I don't know the headliner I was very pleasantly surprised. She and her band are young and very talented. The harmonies of the four horns were quite beautiful and projected a sense of bold serenity. Ms. Kato's piano solos were also serene but compelling - no bombastic runs up and down the keyboard or pounding chords - just light, melodic investigations. Her voice is pretty and soft-spoken and she uses it to harmonize with the band or occasionally to sing in Japanese. The overall style was definitely cool but Jonathan Powell blew some hot solos on trumpet and flugelhorn and Daniel Dor kept the beat and rhythms churning behind everyone on the drums. I would definitely recommend seeing them live if you get the chance. Their CD is called "Tales From The Trees" and is worth picking up. I am featuring two songs from it - "Eshubeleke" and "Frostwork" - on my internet radio station (www.splankyradio.com). Not sure when the ensemble is playing live again but Ms. Kato is playing solo at Lincoln Square Steak, 208 W. 70th Street, New York on May 4, 7, 25, and 30. Her website is www.marthakato.com.
  5. I saw it too. I was hoping that with such low expectations I would be pleasantly surprised. I wasn't. I will take a movie like "Whiplash" over this any day.
  6. Both movies (Miles and Chet) opened in Philly recently. I guess I will see them but with much trepidation. Then there is the upcoming Nina Simone movie. I wish Hollywood would leave my icons alone. Or let like someone like Bertrand Tavernier do them. Round Midnight was the only "jazz movie" I really liked.
  7. I just created a 24/7 all jazz internet station using Radionomy (www.splankyradio.com) less than a month ago and we received notification that they were changing some of the broadcasting parameters to meet these new regulations. I hope that takes care of it and that this doesn't jeopardize all the work I put into my station and website.
