  1. You are pretty quick on the trigger tonight.  : 0 )

"Work Song" of coarse.  I'm not good with labels but I probably wouldn't put this in the jazz section of my record collection.  I certainly wouldn't say it is out of place on a BFT though.

Even though I didn't recognize them I am happy that I said I liked Barron and Maupin, a couple of favorites for me.

  2. A good BFT makes the morning at the gym go down a whole lot easier. Not my normal listening so no ID's here. I will say that you have pretty good taste in music though. One blanket statement, there is some good piano playing throughout.

My favorite track is 08. One of the nice piano solos here. Enjoyed the horns as well. Well shoot, I should just say I like it all.

I kind of got into 11 too. A different take on a classic song. My problem is that I can't name that tune for the life of me. Getting old. Butterfield is the only name I can come up with for this stuff but that is probably too obvious.

Don't have much but I am enjoying listening to your effort. Thanks very much.

  3. I am going to say thank you for all sections of the BFT here.  Outside of the Teddy Charles album, everything was new to me.  I hadn't listened to that one for a long time.  Very nice album.  This section and the Moldy Fig were my favorites.

Sadly, it appears that the Spontaneous Music Ensemble album is not readily available. : 0 (  Any other SME albums that you could point me too?  I can't believe that I have never checked this music out.  The beauty of the BFT is finding new things.  Of coarse, that is also the curse.

Thanks very much for your effort.

I'd recommend any of the label bleu CDs that Portal released; if you are receptive to more "free jazz" style then check out the 70s output.

For Nagl I think "strichcode" is one of his best..there's a good CD on the November label too by pretty much the same band!

Thanks and I am totally receptive to "free jazz" style.

  5. As an overall comment, 22 tracks are for me a normally little overwhelming but dividing them up into 4 sections seems easier to manage.

Only one quick listen but two tracks really jumped out at me.  One is track 2 in this section.   Great sounding clarinet, I love the piano solo and piano in general, nice tune.  So, tell me that there is a whole album out there by this group and that it isn't hopelessly OOP.

  6. It is already the end of the month. I always have a lot of fun with these BFTs but I am really bad at the comments part. Sorry.

Outside of track 10 (kind of scary to me), I enjoyed hearing everything you presented. I ENJOYED several tracks. I will have more things for my never ending “have to find out more about this” list. Some highlights:

Track 02 reminds me of one of those ECM piano trios. That is a good thing by me. I love the drummer (cymbaler?).

Track 09 is pretty interesting to me. Some different instrumentation that goes in different directions in a short time.

Track 11 is another nice piece that says l lot in a short time frame.

Track 14 is probably my favorite and the one thing that sounds a little familiar. Definitely the kind of stuff I like to listen to.

Thanks very much for putting this together. On to the other comments to see what has been ID'd.

  7. MG,

I am embarrassed chipping in this late. I listened to your BFT quite a bit and started comments several times during the month of the BFT but came up with nothing. I am not good at writing in the first place but as it turns out, I have not heard most of the artists and actually have not even hear OF a number. That is, of coarse, what I like in a BFT but I know as a presenter you are looking for feedback. Sorry I let you down on that.

I do want to thank you for your effort. I enjoyed listening.

  8. Been enjoying my ride down Missouri Hwy. 137. Here are a few comments, mostly like/don't like. I'm having more trouble with coherence the older I get.

I heard another guitar players' version of “Cherokee” on the radio this morning. I actually have a radio station that plays jazz where I live now. Don't know either artist but your version is much better.

Track 2 is pretty interesting. Neat little intro and exit. Nice trumpet solo. Not big on the drum solo but I like the piano.

This is kind of a dumb thing to say considering who sponsors these forums but I'm not a big organ fan. Track 3 is OK, just not my favorite

About the only time I listen to the traditional stuff is on these BFTs and I almost always am drawn to those tracks. To me track 4 starts with a little boozy feeling (if that makes any sense), almost could be a sound track for one of those old cartoons. That is not a knock, I love those soundtracks. They are some of my first music recollections. I like the soloists. “Loveless Love” no?

Track 5 really sounds familiar. That usually means it is someone I've never even heard of. I like this track more each time I listen.

I've already commented a little on track 6. Probably my favorite right now. You won't cost me any money on this one since I already have it.

Again, nothing wrong with track 7, just not my favorite. Really nice bass playing though.

Track 8, some more older really nice music.

Track 9, not stick a fork in my ear or anything just not my favorite.

Track 10, OK. Another one that sounds familiar.

Now, something a little different. Track 11 makes me picture an old boy sitting on the porch with his hound dog and a cold beverage, watching the world go by. I like it. Except for the dog, maybe that will be me this afternoon.

The first time I listened to the last track I thought it was an into and kept waiting to see where it was going to go. Listening again, it really is quite a nice piece of music. I don't know if I would want a whole record of solo violin but this is a good finish.

    Thanks for putting this together.

  9. So, my one wild guess for this BFT is Leo Smith on track 6. He did an ECM album that had a trumpet trio with, I think Lester Bowie and Kenny Wheeler. Haven't listened to it in a long time but I'm going to soon. Even if I'm wrong, I like this track very much.

I haven't had a chance to do a lot of listening here but there is some good stuff.  I will get back later.

Not such a wild guess. You're right all the way around.

So what do you think, Wheeler on the right, Bowie in the middle, Smith on the left????

I listened to the whole album last night and it's a good one all around.  Thanks for suggesting it.

  11. Not sure what your definition of 'crazy money' is but this copy's reasonably priced

    http://www.discogs.com/sell/release/6606414?ev=rb

shipping could be the issue though

    Another Jazzos satisfied customer here

It's worth tracking down. I've not listened to it for a while now and thank you for prompting me to take it out for a spin

    Thanks Clunky and mjazzg.

The discogs album price is ok but to me the shipping cost is crazy. When did international shipping get so costly? I will take a look at Jozzos. Never heard of it. Thanks again.
