  1. I found an Oscar Peterson Mosaic offered by an Amazon marketplace seller for $3.98! I'm really curious to see how this purchase turns out. It was advertised as a 7-disc set which comes in 4-CD cases with no box or booklet. The condition of the CDs was listed as like new/perfect condition. I'm asking myself,"What's the catch?" It must be a mis-listing. Why would anyone take so little for 7 discs? CDRs? Condition overstated? It's an Amazon fulfillment and the seller is rated at 99% overall (4.9/5 stars) with 201 ratings. So far, the order hasn't been cancelled. With the shipping, I was more than willing to take a $6.96 gamble.

Got a shipped notice today. I'm excited to see exactly what I'll get. Hope this thing pans out.

You never know. I once found discs 1-4 of the Andrew Hill Mosaic for $5.99 from a local store.

  2. I believe the masters of most Atlantics were destroyed in their warehouse fire. The CDs you hear are in general from the LP masters. That's part of why they sound less good than might be hoped. I wonder what the sourcing story is here?

IIRC, that warehouse fire destroyed primarily unreleased stuff and alternate takes. I don't think album masters were stored there and/or destroyed.

  3. So does this mean that Hip-O-Select is the new bully on the block... :(

My main issue is that their stuff is really overpriced (presumably justified by them with extremely mediocre and unnecessary packaging...)... I thought we were done with BAD overpriced packaging at the end of the 1990s :( :(

They're a bit pricier than the Mosaics, but not much - what, $20 compared to $18/disc? And the packaging of the jazz boxes that I've seen have been tasteful and nice - square boxes, smaller than Mosaics, but more compact. Don't know about the notes. I think Mosaics are pricier than they should be as well (at least for a quick sale), but at least the Universal/Hip-O stuff can occasionally be found discounted.

  4. I've pretty much given up on emusic after being with them for over a decade now. Even though they still are "cheaper than most," I've been finding so many used CDs these days for just a buck or two that even 3 or 4 dollars for a download seems to much.

Does this mean you're not particularly interested in hearing new jazz releases like the two I mentioned, or new titles from similar labels?

Not at all. I still pick up the occasional newer release or even buy downloads from Amazon and elsewhere (losing Aimestreet really hurt!), but honestly I've also been finding many newer releases in the bargain bins a well. Found a copy of Hartigan Ensemble for a buck (yes, the double disc!) and various Clean Feed and other indie labels as well. But my tastes are eclectic and I'll pick up almost anything if it's cheap enough. The problem is more that I now have such a backlog of stuff to listen to that some of the newer releases simply get put on hold. And yes, I do realize that there's a "devaluation of music" going on, at least of the physical product. On the other hand, I'm exposing myself to many more artists than I did previously.
