  1. On the other hand... (courtesy of James Taranto):

This August 2011 column by ESPN's D.J. Gallo speaks for itself:

"There is still one area where we Americans are still No. 1: self-esteem. Yes, a study published last November in Psychology Today found that, thanks to going criticism-free from parents and educators for decades, today's American students feel they will make outstanding parents, spouses and workers--even if they've accomplished nothing in or out of the classroom to merit such positive feelings about themselves. We might be dumb, but we're proud of it! . . .

"Which brings us to Eli Manning and the state of the American quarterback. On Tuesday, Manning -- again: this is Eli Manning, not Peyton Manning -- told ESPN Radio 1050 in New York that he considers himself to be in the same class as Tom Brady. Last year Manning led the NFL in interceptions and was 17th in passer rating. He has a quarterback rating of 80.2 for his career. I would compare his production to Brady's, but I fear doing irreparable damage to Eli's burgeoning self-esteem.

"Unfortunately, Manning is not the only NFL quarterback with delusions of grandeur."

After yesterday, Eli's got a point!

Seriously, though, I think a professional athlete boasting confidence is all part of the game - sort of like the "any given Sunday" meme.

just kidding. I have seen the first couple of Potter films countless times. The others are too scary for my kids so I'm not fully used to his adult-style face yet.

Of course the kids who go to Hogwarts really can do anything, and don't have to envisage a future behind the counter at JJB Sports

    Oh yeah? :g

  2. Authentic from the era and fantastic. Amazing harmonies, amazing fuzz guitar and swirling organ, spectacularly spacy lyrics about David floating around the world on a balloon cause "make believe is reality to a child", etc. This is da bomb, my new #1 artyfact of the genre. And chances are, no one has ever heard of them.

Great stuff. I think I posted this one earlier in the thread, but it's interesting to compare and see just how much "Creation of Sunlight" influenced the sound...

It also reminds me of this one by Olivia Tremor Control...

  3. as much as i'm a big fan of The Jazz Bakery and have been for decades, i cannot help but wish they were going smaller with this project. the prices of their offerings, as stated in the article, will be what the charge is for Dizzy's at Jazz at Lincoln Center!!

My thoughts exactly. At the old location - which I've been to numerous times - prices were usually $25-30, with lots of free parking. I've no doubt that the Gehry-designed venue will be much nicer (it couldn't not be!), but I'm not so sure it can sustain with the sometimes minimal crowds the Bakery can often get.

  4. Yeah, whatever happened to radio? Seems like all anybody listens to nowadays is their iPod.

I've been using iTunes to stream some jazz radio stations lately. I forgot how much fun it is not to know what song is coming up next, and I enjoy the chance to hear stuff I don't already own.

Same here, but with Pandora at work.

  5. I've long accepted mp3 (or FLAC) for listening purposes, but I've mostly stopped either burning digital files to CD or ripping CDs to digital files. I figure that I have more than enough music in different formats that I don't need to duplicate it unless I'm making a comp. That is, I can listen to records or CDs or mp3s at home, CDs or cassettes in the car, and CDs or mp3s at work - I don't need to have it all available in each format.

  6. i just switched to chrome - so far i like it a lot!

    :tophat:

Me too, faster,no lock ups and for the most part easier to use once you get used to it than IE.

chrome lover, here, for perhaps 2 years.

for an even better chrome experience, i suggest downloading chrome's developmental version called canary. i dabble briefly with firefox, explorer, opera, and safari. note that canary runs alongside google chrome; it is not a chrome replacement.Nod.gif

    google chrome canary

Thanks for the Canary tip - downloading it now. I've been using Chrome from the start and love it.
