  1. Set nr. 1 from the Mythic Sound box is currently being auctioned on eBay

    Bud Powell Pure Genius

Now this would be a really great set to have! I think I have about 5 CDs of the Mythic Sound material, but would love to hear the whole set on vinyl. Too rich for my blood already (over $600 with some 10 hours to go)... but at least I copied the album cover jpegs for future reference. Thanks Brownie!

    Cheers,

    Shane

  2. Hi All,

Well, apparently I just missed the Bunny Berigan Mosaic set... it sold out last night. So, I thought I'd take a shot in the dark and see if anyone here on the board would be looking to unload their set.

Anyone have the Berigan set to offer to a poor old chronic procrastinator like myself?

    Cheers,

    Shane

And yes, I already posted "The Procrastinator" image in the "Berigan is Running Low Thread".

  3. BC, Calgary looks to be improving over the off-season, don't they?

    *****

    Hi GA,

Man, I've been way too swamped these past few months to get the latest CFL news, so this thread has been great! I've just read the past four pages or so... thanks for all the updates!

The Stamps do look like they've grabbed a few nice acquisitions this off-season. We'll see how they pan out, but I don't mind the pick up of Akili Smith... and anytime you can get a guy named GROOTEGOED on your team, well... that's just good karma! :g

I'll be heading back to Calgary to see my family in a couple of months...

    I'll be cheering for: Stampeders_891712_CFL_3Z.gif

My dad'll be cheering for: Roughriders_890989_CFL_3Z.gif

My mom'll be cheering for: Eskimos_891207_CFL_3Z.gif

And my sister'll be cheering for: BCLions_890988_CFL_3Z.gif

We are one dysfunctional family, I know! Westerners for sure, though! :P

And thanks again for the Art Blakey CD... it is a good 'un!

    Cheers,

    Shane

  4. Man, RVG did some beautiful jazz recordings for Savoy in the fifties. And the sound is a little different than BN or Prestige, CTI etc. on some of these dates. (He's recorded as saying that he tailored the sound according to producer needs.

I can't remember exactly, but I think RVG worked out a weekly routine by which Prestige, Savoy and Blue Note used different days to record at his studio. If someone has the patience it shouldn't be too difficult to work out a RVG discography for, say, the mid-to-late 50s and see what his weeks were like.

A hard job but someone had to do it, I guess :g

    F

I've been in touch with someone writing a book about RVG's studios. It will include a complete listing by date of sessions. I understand Rudy let him copy the studio log books.

    Edit for stupid typo.

    Chuck,

Would that be Dan Skea? I know he's been working on the RVG project for quite a while now... should be fascinating once he finally gets that work out there!

    Cheers,

    Shane

  5. What's in the Mosaic set? I think it's:

    A date with 1 & 2

    Sounds of

    At the organ (1551/2) 1 & 2

    Sermon

    House party

other stuff from those sessions, some of which may be on RVGs. Is that it?

The Mosaic set didn't contain any of the Sermon and House Party material, just

the other LPs from your list. It was a three disc set and the "Sounds of J.S." RVG

includes all the tracks that weren't part of the "Date" and "At The Organ" LPs.

Oh, was it a Select, then? I think I'd have bought it if it was a Select...

    MG

Nah, just one of the older Mosaic sets that was 3 CDs in total. Mosaic did quite a few of those 2-3 CD sets back in the day (e.g., Don Cherry, Curtis Fuller, Sam Rivers etc.), but now it seems they've relegated 3 CD sets to "Select" status. I wish they'd still give some 2-4 CD sets the full blown "Mosaic" treatment.

I think the Jimmy Smith Mosaic sold out around 2000 or 2001. I remember just missing it back then (but have picked up all the material in other forms since then).

    Cheers,

    Shane

  6. This one was just added at eMusic, under the title "Hawk Swings." I'll hit it when my account refreshes.

I am all about that one. Have to wait until May 2nd. :(

I noticed that there are two "Hawk Swings" on the Crown label listed on eMusic... the track listing is not the same, though. Anyone know for sure what each of these albums represents?

The samples on both albums sound good, and I've put both in my "Save For Later" folder... just wondered what the heck I'm really getting though!

    Cheers,

    Shane

  7. He has become a bit softer over the years in some ways, though... Heck, he even cries on the air every now and then!

    :o

Almost unthinkable ! Thanks for the clarification.

Now, I'm no great fan of Don Cherry, but I'll give him credit for one thing... over the past year or two he's highlighted a few tragic stories of people that are not necessarily hockey related. For example, a couple of months ago there was a car crash in a small Ontario town that killed five teenage boys... Don showed pictures of the boys and got pretty broken up/teary-eyed when he sent his thoughts to their families. He's also highlighted some young hockey players and soldiers that have been killed or severely injured (e.g. spinal cord injury), and you can tell he fights back the tears.

I may not agree with Don most of the time, but he does care about the game of hockey more than most people ever will.

    Wonderfully "eccentric" wardrobe, though!

    Cheers,

    Shane

  8. Wynton's latest was released this week.

from the plantation to the penitentiary

You can hear the entire album by clicking on the e-card link. Wynton kind of raps on the last track.

    Rough sledding.

    You ain't kidding, Joe!

Man, there's unintentional irony splattered all over this album... I listened to it all, but it was "rough sledding" indeed. Some of it damned downright painful!

Yet another Wynton album I can safely pass on... and his career as a rapper isn't exactly about to launch! I think KRS-One (who Wynton apes on that last track) would have something to say on this... me, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit! :bad:

    Cheers,

    Shane

  9. Is that pundit guy Don Cherry still in action these days? (not he with the Mosaic but the mouthy one with the stiff collars and gangster suits).

Yep, Don's still there on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday (well, most Saturdays). He spouts the same old stuff he's been saying for the past two decades. He has become a bit softer over the years in some ways, though... Heck, he even cries on the air every now and then!

As for Saskin... well, he reaps what he sows. The fallout from the lockout is still present in the NHLPA, as some of the players still think they shouldn't have settled on the salary cap... Saskin made a powerplay to become Director of th NHLPA, and pissed a few players off in the process (including some of the more vocal veteran players). It'll all get sorted out, of course... and this really is nothing like the vile, disgusting, and illegal shit that Alan Eagleson did back in the day. That man was truly the spawn of Satan!

Finally, Chris Simon is in a world of shit! That was a brutal slash, and he's been suspended indefinitely by the league. I'm guessing he's gone for the year (and rightly so). Not a smart thing to do, especially considering it was the "anniversary" of the Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore incident yesterday! Having said that, Colin Campbell has no friggin' clue when it comes to suspensions, so maybe Simon will only get three games!

Only a few more weeks until the greatest time in all of professional sport... the NHL Playoffs! :D

    Cheers,

    Shane

  10. I don't know whether this has been covered elsewhere on the Board but the first two recordings by Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath have just been reissued on the Fled'gling Label. Apparently they have been remastered and sound terrific. Although the recordings have been available 'officially' and 'unoffically' for some time now it will be great to hear this wonderful, joyful music in all its glory!

    Head Man,

Let me say thank you, thank you, thank you for your willingness to "share" your information on this! I just finished listening to both Brotherhood of Breath albums, and they are GREAT! I'm really digging Dudu's playing on these!

You really are the top demon!

    Cheers,

    Shane

  11. I'm gonna pipe in and say that I don't think the drivers in L.A./So Cal are all that bad. Sure, there can often be a lot of traffic (though i encounter little of it on my commute), but in traffic everyone drives slowly. I've encountered far worse drivers in other parts of the country. And our friends from European cities must be laughing their asses of at our complaints - I've never seen such "bad" drivers as in Paris, Brussels, or parts of Germany.

"Bad" drivers? Maybe in US you created automotive industry with T-Ford, but we created the fastest cars, and about "bad" drivers, this was one of your guys...maybe a little north eastern then So Cal :g

    171-79-ferrari-gilles-villeneuve-postcard.jpg

    Porcy,

Thanks for posting those pics! Gilles was one of the greatest drivers of all time... that man had "speed" written all over him! He embodied all that was pure about racing... I don't think anyone had greater raw speed than him (not Senna, not Fangio, and sure as hell not any of the British drivers that F1 Racing magazine gushes over in each issue).

F1 season starts next week... I think it might be time to start a new thread!

    Cheers,

    Shane

  12. Late,

I downloaded True Blue quite a while ago (October of 2005, it looks like), and I only have three tracks. I only have one Ladybird, which starts off the album and clocks in at 11:06.

I'd report this to eMusic... they'll likely pull the bad track, and should give you credit for the one download that you were burned by. I've had good luck in my dealings with eMusic customer service over the past couple of years... they've refunded everything I've ever asked for.

    Shane

Thanks for the tip, Shane. Is your "Ladybird" screwed up? When you have a chance to listen to it, I'd be interested in knowing. Maybe when eMusic updated (years back) their Xanadu listings to variable bit rate, something happened?

Oh — the mystery continues (forgot to mention this): After I downloaded this title, my download count never went down. Am I missing something? I logged out, logged back in, and it was as if I'd never downloaded the album.

    More

    Hi Late,

Just listened to the track, and no problems with it at all. My tracklist matches up with what Brownie just posted. Glad to hear you got the download for free!

Oh, and thanks for motivating me to listen to this again. I haven't listened to LTD is a while, and this is a good album. Not his best by any means, but fun to listen to again!

    Cheers,

    Shane
