I'm supposed to see them in a couple of weeks in Toronto, and I believe they will be performing this piece.
Koerner Hall? That will be great.

Just came back from a Kronos Quartet concert at which they played "Kiss Yo' Ass Goodbye" credited to Sun Ra, Terry Riley and Sara Miyamoto. According to the program notes it "utilizes Sun Ra's Track 'Nuclear War' as source material." It begins to really kick ass when they sample the drumming and chanting from the original.

It's up at both Band Camp and Amazon.

It's not that either. Some people want to say that it is because of the descending chord section, but they are different tunes.
Do you know what it is?

It's not.
My mistake. I should have said (according to my discography) it's Taxi War DAnce that's really Willow Weep for Me. But I better wait till I hear it to confirm.

Despite the title she gave the article she never gives any total sales figures. There have been several articles pointing out that the DOJ never said that 50% of books published sell less than 12 copies a year. They asked a hypothetical question.

Then you want this one, which also has the great sessions with Nat King Cole and Una Mae Carlisle.

Thanks. Just ordered it. (I also don't have these versions of Taxi War Dance and Tickle-Toe (which apparently is really Willow Weep for Me).

All that material is out there on cd, for example on Masters of Jazz Lester Young and Basie cds, but I don't know of ONE cd that would have it all.
I think I have all the stuff with Basie. It's the Young brothers band material I'm looking for.

I'm not familiar with her, but IIRC (and I often don't) she has some fans here who might be interest in this review:

OK (as is often the case) I was wrong. Buchnamm-Moller does list it. However in the index he just refers to it as "A Little Bit South of North Carolina". He confirms all of the above but adds that he got the info from Lee Young.
BTW Does anyone have a source for a digital or cd version of the Everybody's Lp?

I was thinking of posting this one, but figured that someone else would eventually get to it. 👍
IIRC it's not really complete, but rather a collection of what had been previously released as individual albums put into chronological order. If I do remember correctly I wonder if there is more unreleased material. ( just looked at the liner notes and they claim that this is "all known" recordings from the date but I doubt that they had access to the Contemporary vaults.)
Nevertheless a great set and I'm just being greedy.

Looks like half the houses in LA.

I've found a playlist on Spotify called "Lester Young Chronological solos:1936-1942". There are 200 entries including many (though not all) alternate takes and recorded broadcasts. There is one entry that is not listed in Frank Buchmann-Moller's Prez discography. It's from 1941 or '42: "Just a Little Bit South" and whoever compiled the playlist says it's by an "unknown band" (and singer). The tenor solo sure sounds like Prez of that era. Any one know about this?

Is this a record for the longest time between replies?

Was he playing a real piano until he got to the Headhunters stuff? And did he play Blow-Up?
Until he picked up the keytar off a stand he sat at a grand piano at right angles to a an electric keyboard switching between the two even within solos. Though I've seen the film several times it's been a while and I wouldn't recognize the theme from Blowup.

Saw him last night. Terrance Blanchard and Chris Potter part of the sextet. I thought he walked slowly at first but by end of two hour concert he was bouncing around the stage. He filled a 2,000 seat theater and wowed most of the audience (there were a few early walkouts, but the concert was part of a subscription series and unadulterated jazz probably wasn't what everyone was looking for).
All the compositions were by Herbie except Footprints which he announced was written by his recently passed best friend, Wayne Shorter.
Ended with some Headhunters pieces and never played Water Melon Man.

Impulse (as a search term) doesn’t seem to bring back any albums. Would you share some examples of what you saw? Thanks!!

I've noticed a couple of releases from Impulse on Bandcamp. What's up with that? (I'm not complaining.)

Is that one of the Woodstock releases next to Sweet Baby James?

No you're not. That's the ongoing speculation - who is the second alto player?
I am hearing Dolphy, based on the tone and a few micro quirks in the playing. Check it out a 1:56
Me too. But do you think he has the rest of the photos right excluding those of Wille Smith?

I would suspect that transcribing podcasts is not be done by humans.

When was that, and where?
I love Louis Jordan, but his mass popularity was far behind him by the time of the modern jazz festivals.
Was it something that Johnny Otis was booking? Didn't Jordan and Otis do business together for a minute or two in the late 60s?
It was a club booking: The Zanzibar, 1945.

George Wein included non-jazz acts because of the bottom line, he said so in more than one article and I think his autobiography.
I do find it puzzling as to why the non jazz acts are often the first 8 to 10 acts billed for what is supposed to be a jazz festival. I feel like the Jazz Masters on the bill deserve better, having somebody like Bruce Springsteen billed above Duke Ellington is ridiculous (though Duke would have not shown up had that happened).
Duke was pissed when Louis Jordan was billed above him. But he did show up.
