I don't understand that belief at all. The man had just hit a clutch home run in the ninth inning, with two outs, on the road, against the best closer in the game, and on a ridiculous technicality, had been called out and his team went from being ahead to being the losing team. I don't think any reaction could qualify as "over the top" in that situation. I think that situation might have seen the same reaction from Manny Being Manny, which would be as far from "over the top staged theater" as you can get. I see nothing but an expression of total rage and frustration and disbelief. Absolutely nothing theatrical or over the top or Piniella-like whatsoever. Papi is back, and the Sox are in a virtual statistical dead heat for first place. 56 days, I believe, and we actually went from a game back to even with Tampa. And something to consider: Papi was scuffling in the early part of the year due to a lack of stability in his base, his legs. His knee surgery was not fully rehabbed, and he felt weaker because of it, but couldn't take time off to let it calm down (the "car wreck" at first base in Tampa didn't help either). A big benefit of this injury was that his knee is now 100%. That means there's a pretty good chance that Papi is Big Papi right out of the chute, and that's a dangerous thing thing for the competition. Now, if Tito will make the smart move and drop Ellsbury down to seventh or eighth and go with Pedroia/Drew or Pedroia/Youk at the top, I think the offense would really get moving.

Pretty goofy! The Onion hasn't done it's research though as Prince made a big deal at the start of the season about becoming a vegetarian. That doesn't mean he doesn't think about hot dogs or hamburgers.

Glad to know.

The Stupendous CD Sale Is Here!
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Offering and Looking For...
glad to hear it! -
I don't give him quite so much credit for taking down links - basically people have to inform him that he's offering something that is in print. He often posts LPs from the Fantasy empire - mostly Prestige and related labels - without making any effort to check if it is available. But since he does respond if you inform him, I mostly keep an eye on that site to help him in his quest to offer only OOP recordings. But its pretty ridiculous when I can find that an LP was issued as part of a two-fer CD in exactly two searches on AMG - pick a song title from the list, see what recordings have it. Its either a huge blind spot, or he makes essentially no effort to really be sure something is OOP before he offers it. What's really lame though is the reaction of his visitors to the absence of a link or a link being replaced. They're like children having discovered that their Halloween candy was taken away from them. In fact, I can say that my comments aimed at the music thieves (and particularly the responses they got) led him to change his blog to having comments moderated before they are posted. And to be clear, I don't object to what this guy is doing. If he has nice copies of old LPs that will never (especially now) see the light of day on disc, then I say go for it. The problem is he has attracted a huge number of people who think music should be free, in all cases. And anyway, his definition of jazz and particularly his fascination with over-produced crap from the late seventies really makes that site hit or miss, the vast majority misses.

The Stupendous CD Sale, Part Three
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Offering and Looking For...
We're up to date as of right now, and I'm off to bed, too. -
Up, since there are a lot of good discs still available, and the Curtis Fuller Japanese import, South American Cookin', is available again.

Depressing Day on Organissimo
Dan Gould replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yeah, Whoops. You can join Lowe in the crying for the jewel box section. And for the record, I am selling everything here to maximize revenue flow, both in terms of time frame and how much I get to keep (not paying ebay fees). Have you ever interacted with me without making a snide comment? I don't know and I don't particularly care. I have to date posted three different highly active sale threads that have made it clear what I am doing. The fact that you missed it and decided to post something snide aimed at me, well, don't be surprised when the snideness comes back around. -
Depressing Day on Organissimo

The jewel boxes went away when I switched to storing everything in binders. Why it became an issue I'll never understand, but then again I've learned to expect the very worst from the likes of Lowe. My sale is entirely motivated by financial desperation. I do not wish to put anything on ebay, due to the fees, among other things. I would much rather sell as much as I can to the people here. So please do not let "bad feelings" keep you from PM-ing about any items you are interested in. The best way to help me is to purchase anything I am offering at the price I have set. Ending up with things that you or others might have wanted won't feed the bulldog, as they say. Now I'm off to start posting the G's and beyond. -

Seriously, this bothers me, too. Why should it concern you though? Be like Lowe, cry for the jewel boxes instead. -
I know when he comes back, he's going to be mighty disappointed to have missed at least one item in my sale. And with a certain Johnny Griffin CD about to be offered, that will make two.

Good, trade us Salty -- we *need* a catcher... oh captain, my captain is *done* (don't be fooled by that shot last night). Dan, now that's Lowrie's had a few games, are you still thinking he's an adequate solution? I've been busier than a hooker at a firemen's convention and haven't caught any games since the break (lame, I know). I haven't watched too much myself, because of the late starts, and a birthday party I had to attend Sunday. But what I've seen, he's a much better bat and I haven't seen any egregious fielding errors. I remember reading that he's been told "your glove will get you to the majors, your bat will keep you there" - meaning, if your glove is good enough, your bat will make you valuable. I see a kid who who is patient, gets on base, and hits line drives. What's not to (still) like?

Wow, Ben! And here I was, wondering why I hadn't heard from you on your CD purchases. I hope everyone recovers fully and quickly, and I'll hold all of your discs for as long as necessary.

I got my copy of Groovadelphia!
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
As always, I love the uptempo/funky/groovy tunes, and I think they'll get the disc a lot of attention and airplay. I need to give the ballads a little more time to work their magic though (I may have been guilty too of trying to multi-task while listening). And great sound on the record - I played it on the main system with the big, powerful studio monitor quality speakers, and it sounded awesome! -
Seems like the time to bring back the "Dustry Groove Madlibs" thread but this funky search engine won't let me find it.

Wow. Even I let that one go after 2004.

You really are a pack rat, Chris. I can't imagine why you'd keep so many remotes, unless you still have all the electronics they go with ... but I'm glad that you had the pack rat gene when it came to keeping all of those old print ads, flyers and pictures you've shared. As for remotes - if we're talking about old style remotes or living without them - I remember the first TV we had with a remote control was also our first color TV. It was around 1970, and the remote worked on a frequency that matched what was generated by our dog's metal tags jangling together, or if you shook a key ring. Well, to be clear, it worked on the volume control, which had three settings - low, medium, high. So the dog would get an itch, he'd scratch his ear and set off the volume, up up up up up up and we'd have to wait for him to stop scratching to see where the sound ended up. 9 times out of 10, we'd have to grab the remote to get it back to the volume we wanted.

when you consider that by the time Papi returns Friday, it will be virtually a full two months without him, and at worse, we'll still be within five games of first, I think I'm doing OK. Of course, him in the three-hole doesn't solve the bullpen problem or the fact that Ellsbury looks lost. I think that Tito has to do the smart thing when Papi is in the lineup, and put Pedroia and Youk first and second in front of Papi and Manny, and drop Drew back to his usual 6. Put Ellsbury back at seven or eight, drop the pressure on him to start hitting and let him find his way. But Francona has to be smart and give themselves the best chance for the offense to click and put the Yankees away when they get back from their final West Coast trip. There's another reason not to completely panic - iirc, no more west coast visits, no more road trips of ten games, and no more travel that entails more than one time zone change. That, plus a majority of home games, should keep us in the pink.

I got my copy of Groovadelphia!
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Now what kind of friend of the band would I be if I tried to sell their CD used, on the band's BB? I mean, what could I realistically hope to get for it? $6? -
I'm groovin to the title cut right now ... can't wait to pop it out of the PC and get downstairs for some new Organissimo & lunch.

Help! I can't bring myself to unload my old rock records!
Dan Gould replied to blind-blake's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I think it boils down to this: If you collect jazz LPs, they got much smaller production runs, making them harder to come by, but at the same time, you've got to find another nut with a similar disposition to collect in order to get rid of them at a decent price. If you collected run of the mill rock/pop records, they were produced in enormous quantity, making the "soundtrack of your life" as disposable as the music was when you were growing up with it. I'm not at all surprised that decent prices are only paid for extremely well-cared for copies, or the super rare ones. Otherwise you should be grateful for a buck a piece.
