  1. Well I played about half of There's a Riot last night at pretty high volume - it sounds MUCH better than the old version (granted, that's not hard) - Poetry in particular pratically sounds like a different song! Looking forward to getting some real time with this set.

Well, that's a question with There's a Riot... Should it be made to sound "good?" It seems to me that an essential part of it is its murkiness (like Exile on Main Street). In what way does it sound "better?"

The old version sounded like a fifth generation tape of a murky record that was dubbed over an old Ozzy casette. This sounds like a cool-sounding murky record.

I would LOVE to see a RIOT SESSIONS Box set there must be tons of stuff from those sessions.

  2. re: Smile --

Is it worth looking for bootlegged versions of the '66-'67 sessions? I listened to the 2004 version and it's nice, but I kept wishing for a more authentic, less plastic sound.

    Guy

I think hearing the original material is a must. try tracking down the 4 cd box set "Best Unsurpassed

Masters ( 62-69). On Disc 4 you will find the Smile lp in very good sound all things considered.

I have been lucky enough to have seen Brian live 4 times in the last 5 years twice playing the

entire Smile album. Unbelievable and The Wondermints ( his backup group) are just fantastic.

  3. Some already R&B-ish Ray Abrams from 1951 can be heard here:

Never bought any Little Jimmy Scott. That's a Specialty release, I think, isn't it?

    MG

Just tried ordering this at CDUniverse. On back order since December - looks like Concord is in the process of deleting it.

    MG

MG , i just picked this up at Newbury Comics for $3.99 so maybe they have another copy on their ebay site .

  4. Well you nearly got the right score and wrong winning pitcher.

In all seriousness, did anyone else think that Hernandez was getting about four inches off the inside corner to lefthanded batters? It sure as hell looked that way.

Having said that, its apparent to me that King Felix, if he stays healthy and doesn't get messed up in any stupid shit, ought to be everything that Dwight Gooden was supposed to be, and maybe more.

I'm just glad the game is over the hype is starting to be a little over the top. Maybe now

we can just play the games without all this microscopic attention....." Can Dice K throw in the cold ?"

"Dice K has never done well in day games " .." the ball is bigger in the US can he grip it?".......it

goes on and on enough already.

He pitched pretty decent but it's hard to live up to all this hype !!!

  5. Beckett is having a great day .he just struck out the side in the 6th and has struckout Ichiro

3 times . I have never seen Ichiro strike out that many times in a game.

the rumors in boston are that the Sox have interest in Ichiro for next year , but i dunno

he looks like a different player even in the field , how old is this guy ? 31 , 32 ?

  6. yesterday discs 1-3 of the Basie Verve set, hoping to continue today and finish tomorrow! :tup

almost done with disc 5 by now - the first Joe Williams session is terrific!

and as always I'm rather underwhelmed by the "April in Paris" material - just one of many similarly good Basie albums, I never understood why this was such a classic, Atomic and other of the Roulette dates are better, as is, in my opinion, the Gus Johnson material (mainly the dance sessions) of the Verve period.

How is the Basie Verve set ?.......I'm thinking about ordering this soon .

  7. I'll check in from the Mid-Atlantic/Southeast middle class suburbia. I always associated The Beach Boys with California. The surfing songs and the cars and Barber-Ann, hep me Rhonda... I thought they were full of shit. I thought it sounded as phony as anything that the top five at ten was pushing during my youth. Still do, but what emerged from all of that suppressed emotion was really beautiful (later albums).

Anyway, it all sounded phony to me.

Never felt that way about the Beach Boy's .....i grew up on the east coast , and i figured they were

singing about stuff that happened out on the left coast . At least they were singing about their surroundings

whereas the Rolling Stones always appeared phoney to me singing songs that sounded like they were from Memphis.

  8. Matsuzaka gets win in KC, temp 36 degrees at game time.

    Pitching line: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 SO

I watched the whole game Dice-K was VERY IMPRESSIVE !!!

They might not be the toughest lineup he'll face (Sweeney and Grudzlienak got the day off) but Dice was indeed very impressive. So many weapons - and much better command, despite the temperatures, compared to his last two spring starts.

Talk about drinking the Kool-Aid - I think I've downed a whole keg of the Dice-K flavor!

Dan , did you see the post game show ? Eck was beaming , He couldn't get over the fact that Dice K pulled

a Forkball out of his pocket ( those are his word's) late in the game .

you can say it was only the Royals, but didn't they just beat Schilling. And the Royals starter was just as impressive pitched a heck of a game.

  9. NO WAY.

FRESH is all that and more. In fact someone said this is the LP Prince wishes he made , this is probably true ...but more like the Album that inspires him. Back in 94/95 Prince and his band were talking this album up in the music rags and covering a lot of Sly songs .

In Time and If you want me to stay are masterpieces . also not far behind Babies makin Babies !!!

Skin I'm In !!!..and Que Sera Sera !!!...Frisky is another great song. It's a great album and one of my most

    played Sly records.

  10. Pineiro looked good last night ......didn't he finish strong last year as a reliever for the Mariners?

No, Pineiro was a starting pitcher who was terrible -- and he looked worse in the pen. His ERA was 6.36 :bad:

    FUNKBLAST.jpg

No, he was better in the pen, with an ERA a hair over 4. He also showed better velocity in short stints (93-94) and better results in first innings than later innings.

Its a risk, and I'd rather have Timlin and Donnelly as the primary 8th inning guys, but Piniero may surprise some people.

Re: Baseball Fans. We all drink our favorite teams Kool-Aid. ;)

Well in the pre-game show today Eck said he was very impressed with Pineiro ....so far...and Eck is pretty

honest . He was kind of all over Schill the other day.

  11. Dice K on the mound today .......suppose to be very cold in KC !

Yeah, and I was all ready to sign up for Game Day Audio to listen in when I saw an ad that DirecTV is running an Extra Innings free preview now until April 8. Caught the last 8 innings of last night's game (Beckett was just OK, I'm going to cut him slack that he had trouble with his grip in the cold and that's the reason he walked so many and ran his pitch count up so high) and now I'm counting down the hours to the Big Debut. In this kind of cold, I'd expect Dice to really dominate as long as he commands. Hopefully he's over the bit of dead arm that hurt his control his last two starts.

I will tell ya what looked good last night was the bullpen......everyone on sports radio has questioned

the pen , BUT i think this is an area that Theo has done well.

JC Romero looked very dominating last night.
