  1. Must have been a leader of the stars with one-name monikers, like Elvis, Cher, Donovan, Dizzy and others. Great cover, headline font, use of color. Just downloaded the Apple music "Candido" to check out the music. Thanks for your post in this case.
  2. Personally, OP w/ Freddie Hubbard Pablo LP, “Face to Face,” is a good example.
  3. THANKS….for your helpful, first-hand reader’s response to my indecision re: the Dylan book’s purchasability. Your well-stated reply was focused and seemed to be fair (&balanced). Therefore, I’m relieved of buyer’s remorse and, I’m also eager to get my post-holiday order on its way. Again, thanks! JK
  4. So, it’s not a matter of either/or in a contest to pick a book about Jazz or a book about Modern Song, and not a matter of picking but of respecting both books’ possibilities? Bravo!!
  5. Okay. Agreed that my coffee table already includes a diverse stack. Titles are: The Great Jazz Interviews (unread) was a Christmas gift; The Times Complete History of the World (unread) my grandson’s gift he left with us; What It’s Like to be a Bird (partially read) a gift; Wine for Normal People (wife’s) unread; Chasing Light (wife’s); Coronavirus Politics (academic insights including our daughter’s contribution) So, precious few that I purchased. I suspect, in our sphere, the covers and visual appeal and sentimentality are the standards for coffee table deployment. So, I’m all about effect and not so given to Jesuit scholarship. Hence, I’m trying to gauge the readability of Mr. Dylan (my favorite LP, New Morning; my favorite song, Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat) — and to “turn a new page.” BTW: never a big Sonny fan, however just yesterday bought a copy of “Sonny Meets Hawk!” Quite a document by my strict musical tastes. Looks quite intriguing. Thanks for your suggestion.
  6. I'm curious. Have the forum members read and/or grokked Mr. Dylan's book? I'm in a buying mood...
  7. Here's a GA favorite of mine from 1973, also -- Haven't heard in years. Planning to.
  8. A while back, I felt an urge to burn a CD which I titled Definitive Songs or something similar. As a listener to jazz from the mid ‘60s till now, I wanted to do my own best-ever curation. As I remember I included: a take by Nina Simone, “Born Under a Bad Sign” and “Billie’s Bounce” by Buddy Rich’s group from Very Live at Buddy’s Place and “You Make Me Feel So Young” from Gene Harris (Like a Lover). And these and a solo break in a Keb ‘Mo tune and “I Remember Clifford” Stan Getz Dynasty comprised my list for what has been years until several weeks ago. Although these recordings have been my bedrock championship winners, I found that the record gods had another delight in mind for me. My most recent highest award goes to: Curtis Fuller: Boss of the Soul-Stream Trombone. Check out Track 1, “Chantized,”. Wow!! Every solo a singular masterpiece. But with Fuller, Freddie Hubbard, Yusef Lateef, Walter Bishop, Jr., Stu Martin and Buddy Catlett why be selfish or smug about good fortune?
  9. Any more to reference the Coltrane funeral recording (title, label, credits)?
  10. I’ll reference that recording. (must be beautiful) Very interesting anecdote. JK I’m aware of this type of tribute. Never have seen first-hand. JK
  11. Heck, in the 70’s, Trips we’re better than many trips for that matter. This pecking order is marketing - like hot plates in trucks from the factory. IMO Re: pianoless format who began that format Gerry Mulligan w/ Chet Baker (or Bob Brookmeyer, ‘54) Or Max Roach?
  12. What song? Performed by instrument(s)? I picked a Stan Getz track for my own purpose a while back: "I Remember Clifford," Dynasty, Verve, bonus track, '70.
  13. thanks for the example. was the performance was well accepted? Interesting. what instrument(s)? both songs are perfect i'd say.
  14. Okay, let your personal taste and opinion prevail: I'll start w/ my list, and I choose one of my own DIs here. Stan Getz LP, "Dynasty," (Verve '71) This is one of my chosen few. It feels like an adventure in its concept and almost stand alone playing. Four artists' singular group feat and nothing is left to “say.” Please share your own. JK
  15. Re: Getz cover I’d go with Columbia (yawn) all the way. Usually linear heading, with cursory photo: JJ, Sonny, Paul Winter, Dylan, Monk, Davis, Brubeck, Herman, Goodman, Marsalis, Dirty Dozen. Armstrong, Fitzgerald, Holiday. JK
  16. What a cover for the Howard Rumsey album! Best I’ve seen this year. You know the “theme” and execution thereof might be unheard of in a few weeks or so. Praise to our ancestors who settled the West Coast jazz argument well ahead of the rest of us. Anyone else thankful?
