I finally get to weigh in on these performances. I recently picked up the TOCJs, and I'm certainly glad I listened to them first. The remastering does save the set IMHO.
I disagree with mostly everyone who has bashed this record. While it's not 5-star by any stretch, it really isn't that bad. Certainly, not frentic like described. The tracks do drag on, and Morgan sounds a bit underwhelming, but I don't mind the overall product. If you can find it cheap (and apparently it still gets big bucks on Ebay), I'd check it out. If you can find the TOCJs/JRVGs all the more power to you.
It's also possible that I simply didn't expect anything from these discs...maybe, that's why I don't mind them!

Nice haul today....
McGhee/Drew
Foster/Wallington
$22
-
"Introducing the Three Sounds" TOCJ for $21.62.
That's pretty sweet!!! This album is OOP.
-
I was looking over the list the other day and noticed a nice OOP Les McCann disc on Pacific Jazz with Stanley Turrentine and Blue Mitchell called "LTD in New York."
This one smokes and I'd recommend it to anyone with even a remote interest in McCann.

canada's government is the biggest joke i have ever encountered
This is why many people dislike you!!!!!
Have you ever actually been to Canada you nitwit!?!?! And how exactly have you "encountered" the Canadian government? Did the Minister of Defense sling an ice pellet at your head? Hell, you probably don't even know what the smallest U.S. state is, so I think I'd be asking too much.
I hate uninformed mass public potheads like you who presume to be in the know because you voted in 50% of the elections that have taken place in your lifetime.
That's my daily vent. Where's Soulstation? We need to redress the Money Jungle incident!

We're going to do the late show on Friday the 30th. We'll probably buy tickets this week.
-
I wish I had an extra day or so to go out for some beers with some of you guys and talk some jazz, sports, etc. Hell, even go CD shopping!
Dan — care to stop by the Muse with a van full of cds to sell me? B)
-
I sure will.
We're really looking forward to it.

Horace Silver is dynamite!!!!
I could put on any one of his albums any time of the day and enjoy it...speaking of which, I'm emailing Mr. Tanno...I need some more cheap TOCJs.
I'm going to see him in NYC at the end of the month as well. My girlfriend and I are really looking forward to seeing him perform.
Any idea who will be joining him on stage?
-
What's his handle?

Here's the deal...
I like Mosaics, but like all box sets, I just don't listen to them. I'd much rather have the individual CDs as I will reach for them more often.
I think you're the same, Paul. I hope your motivation for buying the Select wasn't based on the "Phantom" being unissued. In fact, it's going to be reissued at the end of June on Water Records. I'd stick to the individual discs.

Thanks for all the help everyone!!!
The information provided will be very helpful for planning our trip.

What about the best place to buy JAZZ discs? Used? New?
I know people have listed good stores, but are they good for jazz?
-
Hey Folks,
We're still very unsure about where we are going to eat.
What are some classy, but affordable, Italian eateries? Thai?
The three places we're certain on are: Virgil's, Katz, Gramaldi's.
BTW, we're now going at the end of the month (instead of in October). My girlfriend bought me a trip fully paid for 5 days, 4 nights and we're staying in the Muse in Times Sq. It was a grad/birthday gift. What a gal!!! B)

Hey Folks,
I just received the "Howard McGhee Vol. 2/Tal Farlow" disc today from a trade with a fellow board member and, I must say, I'm pleasently surprised. This music is simply fantastic.
Are all the other 10" series this good?
Great disc!!!

"Jazztet at the Birdhouse" — first CD in a week!!!!! I'm slowing down...
-
I'm leaning to going to the Silver. I'm a pretty young guy, and have never gotten to see any of the legends play. Silver would be a perfect opportunity for me.
I think that I'll be attending the Jim Hall Trio at the VV as well. This may be the only time I get to see some of these guys, so I can't pass it up.
-
What is so bad about the Blue Note?
All the NYC guides note that it has terrific sitelines. Is the staff snooty?
It'll have to be a pretty compelling reason for me to pass up Horace Silver.
-
Hey Folks,
Do any of the Blue Note, Jazz Standard, or Village Vanguard have a dress code? It doesn't mention it on their websites.
Thanks!
-
Hey Folks,
I noticed that Bill Frissell is playing at the Jazz Standard with Sam Yahel and Brian Blade. Would this be a solid show to see?
What about the Jim Hall Trio at the Village Vanguard (I heard they were snooty on weekends...)? How about the house band on Monday nights?
Help!!!!! My girlfriend bought me a trip for my University Grad, and I'm psyched!!!!
Thanks.

I saw that, and wondered the same thing. I'm assuming that it's not an official release.

He'll take your American coin...he always gives me two totals because I tend to pay with paypal balances.
Weizy:
Get that Silver disc...it's a gem!!!! JRVG is clear.
-
Pending orders:
Bennie Green "Back on the Scene" JRVG
Jazztet "Big City Sound"
Andrew Hill "Point of Departure" TOCJ
Horace Silver "Cape Verdean Blues" TOCJ
And I just received:
Horace Parlan "Up & Down" JRVG
Horace Parlan "Headin' South" TOCJ
Horace Silver "Serenade to a Soul Sister" JRVG
I love that man!!
-
Andrew Hill "Judgement" TOCJ off of Ebay...and I'm pondering when I'm going to take the "Point of Departure" TOCJ off of Hiroshi.
Damn you, Rooster!!!
An honest apparaisal of Mosaic sets

Just to reinterate..."The Phantom" is to be reissued on June. 29th on Blue Note/Water Records. THese are the same kats that put out the Eddie Gale discs.
