This one !
This album has a special meaning to me.
It was around 1977 and I was a new born jazz fan. Until then I only had two LP´s (Miles Davis "Steamin´" and Charles Mingus "Mingus Ah Um")A good source of information during that days was a radio programm on Saturday Night called "Jazz Shop". The DC Herwig Wurzer spinned and commented records that were new ore newly reissued on the jazz market and he was a voice in the night like Symphony Sid would have been for those a generation before me.
He played the first 2 tunes "Winterset" and the fantastic slow blues "Gotcha Goin and Comin".
I think I haven´t spinned that for 4 decades. Almost have forgotten how good it is, everybody, Byrd´s trumpet is fantastic, Frank Foster, Hank Jones, Paul Chambers (my "hero" from the classic Miles Davis quinted, see..... those men Miles Trane, Red, Paul, Philly J.J. was heroes to me like let´s say for the teenie girls would be John Travolta then...).
Highly recommended if you find it or have it. Play it !
Have this one and love it.

This reminded me that I hadn't visited this great music for a while. Disc one from this and disc six from the Quintet 1965-68 box. Can't get enough of the rhythm section, Hancock's magical, but then so are Carter and Williams..

I have an early vinyl of this. US jacket, French lp - remember those. Just got the cd in the five cd set. I like it as it reminds me of those terrific nights at Ronnie's where the Shepp band's first set was A Portrait of Robert Thompson. Caught them several times and it always amazing, kicking off with a flamenco style solo from Jimmy Garrison. Unforgettable..

Some nice stuff here.

A recording I could not do without. Disappointingly this cd issue doesn't use the original art work.

Much more enjoyable than I remembered

I've had this since it first came out. If I had to choose just one MIlt Jackson recording for any reason this would be the one.

A lot of the tracks are obvious particularly those from the Charliie Parler label. A handful remain a mystery at the moment. But yep,it's all great stuff.

Presently disc 1. Kicks off with the 1947 Carnegie Hall Concert, then two tracks with Machito. I normally give up trying to research this in Lord. It's a bit of a mess but some fine Bird.mostly in good airshot sound.

What are your thoughts on that one? I've never had it gel the way I'd like to, but keep wondering if I have unrealistic expectations.
Didn't work for me. Too long ago to remember why.

for which I have my ticket. I saw her with Equal Interest [Leroy Jenkins and Joseph Jarman] at QEH years ago and have very hazy memories of a gig maybe at the old Vortex but it's too hazy
I was at the QEH concert. I don't recall the music being that memorable but it was particularly good to see the participants.

Very sad news if true - not confirmed on wiki though.
Agreed, very sad. First saw him with a Mingus Quintet. Then later two or three times with the WSQ. What a sound!

Some Jazz Messengers yesterday -
A frequently played favourite. I don't remember when I last played Freedom Rider. Nice Shorter.

Sad news. I'm not a great fan of latin music but from the small number of cds I have by the Fort Apache Band Gonzalez are all terrific..

I recall seeing the Mike Gibbs Orchestra around this time at IIRC The Rainbow. Maybe it was a year or so later, possibly Gary Burton was guesting. Can anyone refresh my memory.
