    Funny Rat

Sure. Done with approximately 2/3 of CDs (up to P) - occupied two racks. If I am lucky, the rest will fit into one, but I doubt it, since S, T, W and Z are all pretty large. Here is rack 1.

"Scream for me Long Beach! SCREAM FOR ME LONG BEACH!!!!" I was listening to Live After Death a few days ago. I saw Iron Maiden in concert 16 or 17 years ago and still have a soft spot for the 1980's albums. Have you heard their latest one? I liked Brave New World quite a bit, even if it is somewhat predctable.

Listeningto Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven - what a beautiful and fresh music! And surprisingly good sound (at least on CD 3). This Armstrong guy definitely could blow. ------------------------------------------------- According to Ken Vandermark's newsletter SONORE reed trio (Brötzmann, Gustafsson, Vandermark) will release a CD on Okka (called "No One Ever Works Alone", live from Cologne 2003) later this year. Having learnt this, I finally listened to SONORE's concert that our friend ubu kindly provided me with - what a phenomenal music (thanks, ubu!). And very lyrical sometimes (pretty often, actually) and quite solemn at moments. I assume the music is to a great degree notated... otherwise I can't imagine this level of spontaneous interplay. Looking forwar to the CD! Also, looks like SONORE will be touring North America in September, so our AMerican friends - try to catch them live if they are somewhere around.

Tony, some of the skyscrappers are gone now, so the emotional effect would be not that profound - but don't worry, when I am done, I will make a high-resolution full-color picture, for your enjoyment. Spines will be positioned in the most perfect way.

With cursing and swearing (and minor to medium damage to various body parts and apartment walls) the first rack is assambled. Assembly is not difficult, it's just me who is clumsy. So the fisrst rack (1520 CD capacity) absorbed skyscrappers A to F, and G partially. I am leaving spaces for growth - should be enough for a couple of years. Looks like I will have to assemble all 4 racks. For statistical purposes, B was the largest category (by far) - 3 skyscrappers plus one solid brownstone. But you know that "Brötztm..." and "Braxt..." are very widespread beginnings of last names. Second largest is S (due to Shepp, Shaw, Stravinsky & Shostakovich mostly). As for the smallest ones, in addition to usual suspects (Q, U, X, Y), I, O, E turned out to be really small. I is mainly "India" , Ibrahim and Iron Maiden. O is bits and pieces.. probably Italian names dominate a bit (Oliva, Orselli, etc.) - and Oxley, of course. As for E, it might improve since I plan to start investigating this Ellington guy... Z was brought to prominence by Zappa - and if I start delving into Zorn, it might grow into quite a section.

OK, the first phase is completed. All the CDs are arranged by alphabetic order (by first letter actually, I will arrange within each letter after I have assembled the racks). Looks like I overestimated the size of the collection - this looks more like 3-4K, which is good - I might not have to assemble all 4 racks. We'll see. Now - assembling.

I also bought my disc from the same e-bay seller (although I think it was $2) - he then sent this crazy e-mail about the dwarfs packing the CDs and elfs delivering them, or something like that. This was my first hatOLOGY CD and I haven't heard it for three years or so (one of those packed in the boxes still). I don't remember the music, but I do remmeber that it left very positive impression overall.

No styles whatsoever, music is music. Strictly in alphabetical order, so Metallica will be somewhere near Monk, Mussorgsky, Mali ethnic music compilation and Madonna (he-he, no Madonna in my collection, I think). In "classical" music, if I rememebr a performer beter than composer(s), I will file by performer. I might make a nightmare photo report of the assembly / arrangment process. Won't look as elegant as this Ibarra girl, but drive, passion, hopes, aspirations and overall titanic effort will be nearly palpable.

I love Henry Grimes' The Call. I don't find it boring at all! Of course music is a subjective matter. I beg you to give it another try though I will! I was actually waiting for someone to come up with such a post Any other opinions on this album? I don't have it, and it is not on THE LIST. Well, if somebody else adds a bit more of controversy here I might go for it if I see it cheap. I liked Grimes' playing - it alone should give some merit to the music... This morning I received CD racks from Canada, 4 x 1520 - hopefully, this is enough. Black instead of oak that I ordered What the fuck is going on with custoemr service in the world?!?! Is it just me, or is it realy getting significantly worse every year? And Switzerland is the worse I've seen so far, btw (going now to the garage to discuss their "minor repairing" (but major cost) of my car, which resulted in back door blocked, cruise control not working (and I need it, otherwise I am speeding all the time!!) and CD player not working ( ). All these were fine before the "repair". Anyway, I will have a fun time asssembling it all, and even more fun arranging the CDs (I will go for strictly alphapetical order, fuck the "styles". "labels" and other nonsense) - now thinking of the most efficient way to do it... I will unpack some boxes with CDs that have been sealed for two years, he-he. Ubu, what the fuck is that signature picture? Is it a mutant Chernobyl once-funny rat?

Listening to Prokofiev's Symphony No. 2 form the monster 24-CD Prokofiev Fiftieth Anniversary Edition - what a powerful stuff! Also received today the freshly-pressed Sergey Kuryokhin's "Some Comination of Fingers and Passion" from Leo records - will listen over the weekend.

Exactly my feeling regarding Hooker. I have several Hooker CDs, and while they cover a really wide ground and have some interesitng moments, none of them really grabbed me, and some of them were downright annoying. Also his drumming itself is not exactly spectacular - good, but nothing outstanding or particularly original IMO. ----------------------- Tony, I will order this Kowald Rastascan CD. Kowald is THE MAN (even when he sings), and I liked most of the Masaoka works I've heard (particulalry the fantastic Fly Fly Fly on Intakt with Larry Ochs and Joan Jeanrenaud. ----------------------- Tony, if you want to hear somewhat harsh koto, here is a disc for you: http://www.leorecords.com/?m=select&id=LeoLab_055 ... although I probably would advice against.

The trip was good. It was nice to be in States again, even if I didn't get a chance to get to NYC. Left Russian CDs in Moscow, of course, so ubu will have to wait till Christmas to get his copy. Bought Pharoah Sanders "Live at the East" in London for insane £18. -------------------------------- As for Bobby Few, don't you find that he overplays a bit on this solo disc?

Friends, I just returned back home from a 5-week trip. To my indiscribable delight, in addition to discovering that my trees are not dead, I also found some mysterious funny and ratty looking packages from usual suspects. Thanks a lot Tony, John B and Flurin! As soon as I recover a bit, I will listen to all the 74 CDs you sent me (should take a couple of days at least), and will report here. ------------------------------------ As for the Other Dimensions band, I have a CD of a cousin band called Fractured Dimensions (recent FMP release) - it's Parker, Carter, Campbell and Alan Silva. Despite my displike for William Parker, and indifference towards Campbell, I liked this disc quite a bit due to nice playing by Daniel Carter (who is a brilliant, if a bit unfocused musician, IMO), and even more so, insane synth playing by Alan Silva that really elevates the record beyond the typical post-free American blow-out.
