Peter Maas – The Terrible Hours: The Man Behind the Greatest Submarine Rescue in History (HarperTorch) A non-fiction book on the rescue of men from the Squalis in 1939, U.S. Navy officer Charles "Swede" Momsen. The submarine went down several hundred feet to the bottom of the sea in the North Atlantic. I think this was the first successful rescue of men from a sunken submarine. Momsen had been researching how to do an underwater rescue since the 1925 sinking of the S-51. He work was often fought against by the Naval beauracracy. Thrilling story.

I don't think I've heard this Berlioz work before. Some very beautiful music here. I sought out a recording of this work because last month my daughter sang in a concert as a member of the choir of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra. (I wasn't able to get down there to hear it, alas.)

  17. I didn't know Gruenberg, so I looked him up. This concerto was commissioned by Heifetz in 1944, premiered by Ormandy in Philadelphia and recorded by Monteux in 1945. Gruenberg did a lot of film work in Hollywood from 1939-1950 had several Academy Award nominations. He was an uncredited contributor to the score for John Ford's classic Western "Stagecoach."
