the specifics are that on AMM's first record AMMusic 1966, the first sidelong track is titled "Later during a flaming Riviera sunset". so, if I recall correctly (I don't feel like going upstairs to check), track 4 on Piper at the Gates of Dawn is called "Flaming" in tribute to AMM, and the first minute or so is their attempt to sound AMM-ish. Paul McCartney was also supposedly influenced by AMM, Keith's told me that AMM played a house party once where all four Beatles were on the couch watching them...

do you know my man Keith Rowe taught crazy Syd guitar in the sixties? not his primary teacher, but one of them. there's a short AMM homage on the first Pink Floyd record, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, I can dig out the specifics if people are interested...
  3. well, 044: Tetuzi Akiyama/Günter Müller-Points and Slashes and 045: Julien Ottavi/Dion Workman-misenlian should both be out within the next month or so, and then the amazing double CD from the four gentlemen of the guitar should follow in July. I think after that, I'm probably done for 2005, maybe one or two more ErstLives. I think I'm in good enough financial shape to cover all of those now, what I need money for is what's beyond that, the Rowe/Nakamura recording sessions last week in Switzerland and hopefully again in late June/early July in Vienna, the Jason Lescalleet/Tim Barnes recordings we're doing here next weekend, ErstQuake 2 in September (are you coming down for this, John?), that kind of thing. and yes, these eBay sales are definitely helping, so thanks again to anyone bidding on them...
  4. thanks, guys. I'm still pretty excited about a couple of these that have closed in the last few days, the Braxton Novus disc that went for $98, and the Mulligan/Baker box that went for over $150. now that I seem to have some hardcore people who follow all my auctions and bid on a lot of them, I'm starting to put up some of the Japanese import Tokuma reissues of Arista/Freedom LPs, which were never easy to find, curious how those do. oh, and I put up Rara Avis, for the person asking earlier in the thread...
  5. no rush, I've got plenty to sell. if it doesn't go now, it'll go sometime.
  6. OK, I lowered the initial price on I Am An Indian from $22 to $18, although I did see a used copy for sale for $24.99 at DMG today.
  7. maybe it is, that's why no one's bid yet. it's hard to always know exactly what's in and what's out of print, especially once you own something already. Rara Avis will be going up soon. agreed that Clusone were a great band, saw them a few times, including a killer midnight show at the Knitting Factory in the midst of the What is Jazz? fest, the closest to rock energy I've ever seen an acoustic improv show. rumor has it that they've recently reformed, not a hundred percent sure if that's true or not...

yeah, I was at that Chadbourne/Lovens concert too, quite nice, impressive the way country songs coalesced out of abstract improv. my favorite Chadbourne is Solo Acoustic Guitar, Vol. 2, available on CD on Rastascan.

John, Thrill Jockey should have the Mosz stuff, I thought FE picked it up also, maybe not. Pita has an upcoming disc on there, curious to hear that one. the solo Hauf isn't too far from the solo Siewert you mentioned, definitely towards the pop end of things, albeit in a more sophisticated Vienna way. Yuko listens to a ton of this stuff, my favorite disc in this vein is the Mimi Secue-Forst (Karate Joe), which I did stock a few copies of, very nice disc. Cortical Foundation: they did some amazing stuff, but maybe 3-4 years ago, Gary Todd, the guy who runs it, fell out of his window and mostly paralyzed himself, effectively ending the label's operations. I'd avoid the LAFMS box, and maybe look for individual releases from the best band in that scene, the awfully titled Smegma. the release I totally love from them, but that's a bit of a rip-off, is Terry Riley-You're No Good. it's a double CD for $30 or so, but only the first CD is essential, and it's a very short piece. but it's still worth your money, easily my favorite release ever from the Glass/Riley/Reich crew.

yeah, order music from more interesting labels. not much I'd recommend, they seem to mostly be interested in producing as much product as possible, but the Wooden Guitar compilation's pretty nice: http://www.locustmusic.com/woodenguitar.html
  11. you're not kidding, I'm waiting to see what the Clusone Trio stuff goes for, two up there now, two more on their way. Might the Braxton Basel Hat Art make an appearance at some future date?? (Actually hatOLOGY, but you know what I mean.) strange, I used to have that one, but I don't see it here now. I must have sold it already, sorry. definitely more Braxton on the way, though, the duos with George Lewis from 1976 is next, still thinking about whether I should part with Willisau or not...

  13. thanks, man. my wife and I have a pretty good system going here, I do the selling, she does the packing, I take them to the post office....
  14. yeah, god forbid I sell discs from my collection for what the market will bear in order to keep my own label afloat longer. give me a break, no matter how tongue in cheek that was. a few people have thanked me for posting here and alerting them to the eBay sales, so with all due respect, you can take your preaching on "bad manners" and stick it.
  15. just a heads up to some eBay auctions people here might be interested in, since their genre descriptions don't overlap much with what I'm selling. I'm putting up quite a bit of my collection as I get to it, hopefully over 1000 CDs by the time I'm done. I'm trying to list 5-10 new titles every day, so please keep an eye on my listings if you're interested, thanks a lot! currently listed are discs by the Clusone Trio, Anthony Braxton, and many others. some of the listings with no bids yet are discs by Ornette, Paul Bley, Sun Ra, Threadgill, the American Jazz Quintet (featuring a pre-Ornette Ed Blackwell), and all three volumes of Wildflowers (the famous seventies NY loft jazz compilations), among others. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZerstrecs thanks for your time!

my guess is that it probably needs about twenty quality listens to really get a grip on it, a number I'm not near yet myself. at 230 minutes a pop, that's over 3 full days, a pretty serious commitment. same thing with the musicians, I know that Otomo, Keith and Toshi are still listening to it a lot, and love how ungraspable it is. I'm curious to see how the master digester, Nate D., does with this behemoth.
  17. Arthur Doyle is both a free jazz musician and a representative of "outsider music", I meant exactly what I said. David Tibet is a Doyle fanatic (as well as being a Jandek fan) and has released one of his records on Durtro, FWIW. just because Jandek uses an upright bass occasionally doesn't mean there's any actual jazz connection there. not a big point, just something that I thought of when reading your post. I'm behind on Jandek, 2 or 3 releases I need to pick up, but I'm losing interest somewhat, I think...
  18. great thread, one comment... that would be Arthur Doyle.
  19. I've got quite a few of the 6000-6200 series up on ebay now, with at least another ten or so to follow soon, if anyone's interested in taking a look... http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZerstrecs

hey, that's just about as informed an opinion as Derek's, you're only one disc behind... maybe we should start a site where we write lengthy, in-depth reviews before actually receiving the product, just based on the musicians, the label, and the circumstances. oh, wait, that's basically what quite a few critics do already...

I wish I was in Tijuana, eating barbecued iguana. I get requests on the telephone, I'm on a wavelength far from home. (I think that's a different WoV record, but that's the best I've got)...

yeah, well, that makes two of us, although the packaging is exceedingly attractive. I've said it before plenty of times, but I'm really not much of a fan of her and Toshi's solo work. it's ok, but they're so sensitive as collaborative improvisers, I'd pretty much always rather hear them in those contexts. ebay: I don't fully understand your post, Tony, but then again, I don't fully understand the ebay thing yet. Gary knew the reserves on these were $20 so he bid that (since he doesn't really know the fine points of ebay either), I don't get the point of not telling people the reserve price, the idea for me is to sell them, but I don't really want to do that for less than $20 apiece, since they probably cost $16 or $18 apiece new, and have been OOP for a while.

John B, what's the over/under on Tony becoming a no-input mixing board aficionado? 2 years? GIVE ME ELECTRONICS OR GIVE ME DEATH! (that's the Tony of mid-2007, not me)
