  1. In 1968 I worked for a radio station, and had the pleasure of meeting Jean The Shrimp Shrimpton. She was billed as "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World", and I wouldn't disagree. The models of today can't hold a candle to her IMO.

I saw a picture of her a few years ago, and she looked terrible, with bags under her eyes and a double chin. But in her day she was the greatest of them all!

And when you look in a mirror you see what.... an old man with bags under his eyes and a double chin maybe? :)

    UCCM 9242 Gonsalves,Paul(ts)/Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick* 2300

    UCCM 9243 Ross,Ronnie(bs)/Cleopatra's Needle* 2300

So how limited were these things anyway!?!? I am trying to get a copy and so far, Hiroshi can only get me the Ronnie Ross CD. Does anyone know where I can order a copy of the Gonsalves disc? Did they print like 500 copies? One month's stock?

  3. [What the fuck did you read?

I wrote nothing implying anything even remotely like that. If you believe otherwise, you are dreaming.

Newsflash for you - read the actual words and don't "project", ok?

Jim, drop the attitude and maybe we can keep this civil, OK? What you wrote was:

Think about it like this - in the 60s, the "face of jazz" for people looking to be "hip" was John Coltrane. Now, directly or indirectly, Trane used his "vibe" to make things more "open" for a lot of peole who otherwise would not have gotten to the front sidewalk, never mind in the front door.

From there, you went to extrapolate that to the LCJO is doing the opposite of what Trane did.

Would that not imply that you feel that Trane did it "right" and that the LCJO is doing it "wrong".

FWIW, I am not defending the LCJO's approach to Jazz presentation. I do believe that they are presenting a form of Jazz that will sell to their core audience. I read your prevous writings as saying otherwise.

  4. Jim, you wrote a lot of prose that seems to be saying "Wynton should be playing free Jazz at LCJO".

That's what Coltrane did, so that must be what you're implying.

Well, newsflash - I've read many stories of people walking out on Trane when he started going way out. They paid their ducats to hear "My Favorite Things" and when he whipped out "Ascension", they walked out.

If the LCJO started playing avant garde pieces, they WOULD NOT MAKE $12 million. If you believe otherwise, you are dreaming.

  5. Guess we just have a different set of values when it comes to jazz, Kevin.

I would think so! I value the music, first and foremost. You'd keel over and die of apoplexy before ever admitting that Wynton Marsalis can play. You don't listen to the music, you listen to the man.

What I don't get is how you've ever been able to stomach so of the music played by other outspoken Jazz musicians. There have been many assholes who've jumped up onto the bandstand. Do you allow their personal defects to intrude onto your enjoyment of their music as well?

  6. "JALC is a top orchestra" -- huh? In what sense?

Look at the numbers from that link Jim provided. JALC is making a lot of money playing Jazz, probably more than any Jazz orchestra in history. Tell us of another Jazz band that made $12 million/year!

But, keep on lickin' Kevin! Is Michael C on the shelf now? :)

I point out some facts and somehow I'm lickin' some boots? I ain't defending the Marsalis musical world, I'm merely pointing out that his salary is far more in line with most artists in similar positions. You're the one who sees it as boot lickin'.

I imagine you can't see your shoes with the woody you're sporting now that there's another "Bash Wynton Marsalis" thread.

  7. Check this article out: http://www.boston.com/news/globe/living/ar...conductor_in_us

If these conductors, many of whom simply stand up there swinging a baton and don't play a note, can get paid as much as $3.5 million, why the hell shouldn't Marsalis, who actually writes music and plays an instrument, get $1 million?

I've seen the Boston Pops several times. I was always amazed at how Keith Lockhart's baton never seemed to be on the beat, nor did the band seem to follow any of his cues. His baton "swooosh" is flamboyantly wacky, often getting the crowd to laugh. And he gets $739,894 for that?

I'm sorry, but you guys are off base here. The "stars" of the top orchestras, and JALC is a top orchestra making plenty of money, get paid well. Why shouldn't Wynton Marsalis?

  8. I was once in the middle of a very serious meeting at work. All of the big hitters from the research group were brought in to try and solve a tricky problem we were having with a product. I presented a paper and it launched an in-depth discussion of what we needed to do from there.

As I sat there, my boss slid a paper over to me. Thinking it was something he wanted me to bring up, I read it. It said, "Barry's breath could kill flies". I broke out in hysterics and everyone in the room thought I needed to be sedated. I can't tell you how embarrassed I felt at that meeting. But, I'm still laughing as I type this. It still cracks me up just thinking about it.

I can only imagine a similar thing happened here. After all, we can't see his face so we have no idea what he was looking at while that tragic scene was show to viewers.

  9. These numbers are pretty typical. Look at the peers. Several of them pay just as much or more for their president. I'm sure that the others pay less to their artistic director because they don't perform as often. Marsalis plays weekly there. Besides, check the revenues! JALC made $12.8 million last year. Some of the others lost money.

All these numbers show is that Wynton's part of corporate America. He's getting a lot less than some of the VPs at companies making $12 million and a whole lot less than most presidents at those companies.

  11. As I understand it, "Charles Shaw" actually is wine that comes from a variety of wineries, for reasons I'm still not clear on. Since there's no one consistent "Charles Shaw chardonnay," it's possible that the testers got a particularly good bottle. Maybe even TJ's can distinguish which are the best suppliers and entered one of the ones they knew would have a fighting chance.

Two Buck Chuck is a product of the Bronco Wineries. This corporate mega-wine maker sources grapes from wherever they are cheapest but they almost always blend whatever they get. It's true that the wine varies from year to year and maybe TBC is in one of their good years. :)

Bronco sells their wines by the bottle, box and jug under a lot of different names. The best known one is probably Fetzer. If you do the math on a 3 Liter box of Fetzer Chardonnay, it comes out to about $2.50 for 750 ml. Trader Joe's just got the Bronco Winery to give them the same price as Fetzer got for their boxed wine but they got it in 750 ml bottles. Same wine. If you really like TBC, just but a box of Fetzer. It'll keep longer.

BTW, this stuff isn't horrid, but it isn't very complex either. Many wine drinkers want that complexity. Wine tasters at The California State Fair probably wanted something to wash the taste of the fried dough out of their mouth. :D

I have not been impressed with TBC's Cabernet Sauvignon. The Chard is OK, as is the Merlot, but not the Cab.

  12. A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland

A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe. :P

What, has political correctness affected even old dirty jokes? The lines are:

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland

A week before Kennedy was shot, he was *in* Marilyn Monroe.

    Badda-boom!!

  13. Anybody know just how "definite" these releases are? With all the tightening up at EMI and the occasional indecisiveness on BN's part when it comes to the latest batch of RVG titles, can I safely unload my current copies, especially the Conns? I do typically like to sell stuff as far in advance of a RVG release as possible, to get the most money out of 'em.

Lately, Michael has been giving me PCN numbers for upcoming releases. Somehow, I think this makes them more "official".
