  1. I thought these "Wally" titles sounded familiar. I looked in my pile and found that I have two, Andrew Hill's "Judgement!" and Dizzy Reece's "Blue In Trinity". I then realized why I thought these were going for around $10... these were issued in the Connoisseur & Rare Groove series... from digital masters. There was a big stink about this when it was discovered and afterward, most stores couldn't give them away. The vinyl afficiandos put their noses in the air at them.

I can't tell you how many times I had that Hank Mobley "A Slice of the Top" in my hand, only to put it back down because I had heard it sounded lousy. I almost bought it just to see.

It's good to see that some people played them before passing judgement on their sound. As for myself, I don't think I've even played either one. I bought them to get signed. Andrew Hill's autograph on "Judgement!" is pretty wild. Silver Sharpie across the black shadows. :) I'll have to give them a spin. Hell, I think the Reece disc is in a picture frame!

  2. How does a "Wally" of "Sweet Honey Bee" improve what is already a tape of an LP? You would think even vinyl fans would dig the CD of this session... it's a needle-drop! :)

Hmmm, are we sure about all this...? <_< Heck, the copy I have sounds fabulous!

Definitely. The master tape of "Sweet Honey Bee" as well as Silver's "The Jody Grind" are LP dubs. Cuscuna confirmed that a while ago. In fact, there was a lot of talk about the JRVG CD of "Sweet Honey Bee" as being "click-free". When RVG re-did that title, he didn't use the US master, but went back to the Japanese master to see if it was a tape dub (after getting hounded by me for a month! :D). From what Michael said, it seems that the Japanese master is simply a cleaned-up needle-drop.

BTW, isn't $15 a little on the high side? Maybe I'm full of it, but I swear these went for around $10 when they came out and even at that price, didn't sell all that well. In fact, I'd be interested at $10, but $15? I'll play the CDs.

  4. I would still like the option of the ignore feature. You never know when the next "Stimpy, you eeeedeee-yot" will show up 'round here.

When the heck are they gonna transfer the server anyway, Jim? I bet Use3D could do it in 10 minutes.

  5. My wife and I decided to spoil our girls like good Americans, so we've booked a week in Disney for April vacation (4/23-30). I look forward to going to the bathroom with Lester Young and Satchmo.

My sister-in-law is coming along and she will be taking the girls out two nights, leaving me & the wife alone for a little romance... after 25 years of being together, a "little" is all we need. :) Anyway, I wanted to take her to a nice restaurant and we've perused the Disney-area places like Narcoossee's et al. I was wondering if anyone had experience outside of Disney? We are staying at the French Quarter resort but we'll have a rental car.

Any good Italian or Thai restaurants nearby that could be recommended or should we just stay on the Disney compound and pay through the nose? Any "upscale" Italian joints with a good wine list that won't cost $200 for the two of us (like Victoria & Alberts would)?

Actually, while I'm at it, maybe on one of these road trips, I might see if I can swing by a CD shop. That's romantic, right? :D

  6. ss1, norton is a piece of crap. Do yourself a favor and get AVG (www.grisoft.com). They have a free version and even the virus database updates are free. It's also smaller than Norton and doesn't clog up your resources. Norton is a memory hog.

    AVG Free Edition is here:

    http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

That said, you still need a program that scans for malware, spyware, and the like. Ad-Aware is a good one.

I've used Norton's anti-virus for almost 10 years now and I've had great luck (knock on wood). Recently, when my subscription came up for renewal, I upgraded to their new anit-virus program with built-in anti-spyware. So far, it's been great. I see no slowing of my machine because of this package. However, I have worked on many machines with Norton's "Internet Security" package and that will kill your performance.

As for AdAware, I uninstalled it. Unless you get the paid version, it doesn't stop you from getting infected, it merely helps you remove infections afterward. Spybot does allow for active blocking but it does miss some malware. I downloaded Microsoft's free ('til July) Anti-spyware program and it has been great. Not only is it active, it removes the infections better than any other package out there. SS1 should download and run this first.

  7. I would like to see a CONN of Bobby Hutcherson's difficult HEAD ON album including the UNISSUED tracks from the same sessions.

Hasn't Mosaic said that this material is scheduled for a future Mosaic Select box? I could have sworn someone posted this recently.

  8. Sounds like a download trojan virus. Are you still using Firefox to surf?

I have found a good program for rooting out the nasty programs. It's called X-Ray PC. You can get it from http://www.x-raypc.com. Download it (it's a .zip file), unzip it and run. It brings up a window with all the processes running on your machine. Click the "Online Analyzer" button and check the "Triage" column. Any process that comes up bad, click it and then click the trash can. Poof. Gone.

  9. Yup, and $5/gal. gas won't faze 'em a bit.

Isn’t this starting to be reminiscent of the 70’s gas shortage? People still bought the big gas guzzling cars, yet still bought gas like it was no big deal. History repeating itself, I s’pose. (Of course, now the conservatives won’t be able to use the phrase, “Do you want high gas prices?” as a scare tactic anymore.)

I was around during those gas shortages. There weren't any cars out there that didn't guzzle gas! :) Well, maybe a Chevy Vega (gack!) or a Pinto (BOOM!) or a Beetle... but don't get rear-ended! :D

Back during those days, prices were around $.25 per gallon and maybe hit $.50 by the end of the late-70s. Gas was cheap. You could fill up your 25 gallon tank for $10. I remember my first car. A 1968 Chevy Impala. I could put $2 in it and drive around for the night.

I guess I'm just venting a bit. I am really sick of the huge SUVs around me. My admin went out and bought a Lincoln Navigator. She wanted to be "safe". Well, to hell with people like me, right? She might safe if hits me, but I'm likely dead. She says she gets around 10-12 mpg.

On top of that, our glorious political machine phases out tax incentives for fuel-efficient cars and then gives huge tax breaks to companies buying Hummers... but that's for the political forum.

Oh yeah, a guy at work who drives probably 35 miles each way just went and bought a Ford F350 4X4. The thing might get 9 mpg in rush hour. I wonder if he's regretting that purchase yet?

    Kevin

  10. I want gas prices to go through the roof! Maybe super-high gas prices will wake up all these crazy SUV drivers around Boston. I drive my Prius along and I'm literally surrounded by behemouths. I figure if I get in a "fender bender" with one of these beasts, I'm getting a bumper in the head.

Where the hell is our government in this fiasco? The cafe standards were allowed to expire and this is the result. The car manufacturers were supposed to be working to make more fuel-efficient cars. Now that the CAFE standards were allowed to lapse, cars just keep getting bigger & bigger.

Just the other day, a guy I play volleyball with was telling me they can't enough V8 Mustangs in. He complained that they couldn't sell the V6 versions for nothing. The thing is, the V6 version has balls! It can smoke most cars. But people want that V8.

Make gas $5. Maybe then people will think about conserving.

  11. This same band is coming out with another CD in May. I have an advance copy and it's another good one. It's called "Joyous Encounter".

    Kevin

    Is it ballads?

They're are a couple of ballads but it isn't all ballads.

    The track listing is:

    1. Autumn in New York (Vernon Duke)

    2. Bird's Eye View (Joe Lovano)

    3. Don't Ever Leave Me (Thad Jones)

    4. Alone Together (Howard Dietz/Arthur Schwartz)

    5. Six and Four (Oliver Nelson)

    6. Pannonica (Thelonious Monk)

    7. Consummation (Thad Jones)

    8. Quiet Lady (Thad Jones)

    9. Joyous Encounter (Joe Lovano)

    10. A Child Is Born (Thad Jones)

    11. Crescent (John Coltrane)

At joelovano.com, there are a couple of "video previews" there. Joe mentions that the first track, "Autumn in New York", was planned for the "Ballads" album.

    Kevin

  12. Rooster, I have heard the recording before. It is basically an all standards recording. My memory is that it is a solid recording, if not essential.

    Ditto.

I have heard this session many times. If you dig Joe playing standards, it's well worth picking up. I dig Joe playing standards, so I will pick it up! :)

FWIW, I am listening to Joe's upcoming "Joyous Encounter" these days. I found a promo at a local store. It's another session of "Joe playing standards". It got me thinking about "Tenor Time" again. I hope this comes in.

    Kevin

  13. I have a friend who has a nice Japanese-only Joe Lovano CD which was called "Tenor Time".

    cd-23.jpg

It's on the Something Else label, which is an EMI subsidiary there. It's a very nice quartet date where Joe sticks to straight tenor sax throughout. Junko Onishi is on piano. Rodney Whitaker and Al Foster round out the rhythm section.

I have been looking for a legit copy of this for a long time with no luck. Hirsohi has tried locating it without sucess. Does anyone know where I can get a reasonably-priced copy of this CD? I think there's a used copy on amazon.co.jp, but it appears to be 6,000 Yen, which works out to $55 and then there's likely another $10 to get it shipped... and that's if I'm reading their website right since I don't read Japanese. Just a bit more than I'd like to pay but if it's all there is, I'll have to think about it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    L8r,

  14. Re: the Cox albums. I don't think we'll see a twofer anyway near the 80 minute mark again, as I believe then there wouldn't be room for the Copy Control extras on the discs for the European market.

Michael Cuscuna is not a big fan of copy protection. This "limitation" might just make[/] him do this two-fer! :)

  15. It's probably not the monitor, but instead the PCs came in with funky display defaults. I don't like "Clear Type" font smoothing, and that's what Windows XP now defaults to at work. To see if this is the problem, right mouse click the desktop and then click "Properties". Go to the "Appearance" tab and click "Effects". Make sure the box for "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" is checked and set the pull-down to "Standard". Look at your screen again and see if that's better. If the box was checked and you don't like it, try unchecking it.

BTW, "clear type" smoothing was put into Windows XP because of flat panel monitors. It makes me nauseous.

  16. If you can find them, the Analogue Productions SACDs are phenomenal. Pricy, but phenomenal. I special order them from a local shop and they get them for me for $21. They have the two Bill Evans Vanguard discs and they've never sounded better. Cannonball Adderley's "You Know What I Mean" is probably the best sounding one in the bunch but Chet Baker's "Chet" is pretty close.

Sony's SACDs, like Mingus "Ah Um" and Miles' "Kind of Blue", while sounding very nice, are only slightly ahead of the new remastered CDs. Better but only by a hair.

UMG has some very nicely done SACDs "on the cheap". Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", Getz "Getz/Gilberto" and Joe Henderson's "Lush Life: Music Of Billy Strayhorn" are all much improved on the CDs.

In the rock arena, if you're a Pink Floyd fan, get "Dark Side of the Moon". My favorite though, is Aerosmith's "Toys in the Attic"... this has the added benefit of having an incredible multi-channel mix. If Beck is your style, people rave about "Sea Change". However, if you do want this, it's in my trade pile. The music might sound good, but I think Beck sounds like Dylan on quaaludes. The Peter Gabriel discs are all OK, but with brand new remastered CDs out there, the improvement is marginal. Ditto the Police discs. Steely Dan's "Gaucho" is definitely a huge step above any CD version out there. James Taylor's "JT" has some pretty incredible audio. Taylor's guitar is in the room with you on a couple of tracks.

If your disc is a muti-format machine and plays DVD-Audio, be sure to get Neil Young's "Harvest", The Eagles "Hotel California" and Yes's "Fragile". All will turn heads, particularly in multi-channel mode. "Harvest" may be the best sounding two-channel rock disc I own.

Have a field day with this format. I've been buying them like crazy because I worry about how long they'll be around. Sony sucks. They invent a great format and drop support. Now they make Dual Discs. I wouldn't buy a Sony Dual Disc if it was the last disc in the rack.

  17. The "Consequence/High Frequency" two-fer looks unlikely. Michael reply to this was, "I was thinking about that, but they are not a real match in terms of personnel or approach." In the past, when he's said this, it didn't happen. It was a nice thought though.

Of course, he's also changed his mind about these kinds of things too. :)

    Kevin

  18. I don't think there is any additional material. It was specifically intended to have each writer do just two pieces. Four tunes per session was standard. There are no gaps in the master numbers. The Russo and Charles were done on April 30, 1959 and the Albam and Macero on May 15, 1959.

The Macero pieces are included on his own album, issued on Stash as "The Best Of Teo Macero" and now available through cdbaby.

    Mike

Aw crap, Mike! I was so hoping there was more material around from these sessions. I really like this stuff. I was even hoping it was like the Buck Clayton jam sessions that Columbia did... you know, maybe an unedited Phil Woods solo somewhere on the tapes? :)

I'll still be on the lookout for it.

BTW, if this isn't legit, shouldn't we expect it will be mastered from the tape(s) that produced the Fresh Sounds LP? If the Fresh Sounds LP sounds bad, chances are that release will sound just as bad.
