  1. There is a new CD release of "MY People" by Duke Ellington, in the complete form 25 tracks. Also there is another release of Duke Ellington's "The Jaywalker". Both CD I composed the percussion parts for Ellington, at his request. Please, read the notes on both CD's at it will explain how Ellington ask me to join his orchestra and do the percussion parts with his musics, in "clave". Regards, Juan Amalbert a/k/a/ Emmanuel Abdul-Rahim www.eastwestrecords.com/
  2. For drummers it's a pain in the ass to play (pardon my English). Unless you have it in your blood, of course. http://www.geocities.com/sd_au/clavetheory/clavetheory3.htm Cheers! I did check the site you mentioned, and I must say that the "theory" here is quite "Hybrid." In other words not musically correct in the notation, whether it is 2-3 clave or 3-2 clave as they try to describe it. First, let me say that should one notate a clave in 4/4 it will never sound correct when it is read by a musician who should play it. Musically, Juan Amalbert Hi Juan, you're right of course. I just took the first link that popped up. The clave is, for us Europeans, quite a complicated thing. It's the feel of it. I remember a (from Brazil) drummer I met not so long ago who basically said (I'm paraphrasing here):" You're not gonna get it anyways, so just drop it!" The notation is just squeezed into a scheme most people here are familiar with, and I've seen it like this or similar many times. But if you don't know what it is, you're just gonna get a mechanical-sounding thingie that's about as far removed as possible. I have one excellent notation (or: an attempt at notation) from a German drummer magazine called "Sticks" ... I'll try to find it in my piles of mags floating around here. I'll scan it, if I can get my fingers on it. And, welcome to the board! Cheers!
  3. The complete recording of Duke Ellington;s "My People" is a new CD released with all the original music on Storyville Records. With the music that I composed and played on the original recording session in Chicago, Ill., 1963. Rhythmically, Juan Amalbert a/k/a Emmanuel Abdul-Rahim http://www.storyvillerecords.com/default.aspx?tabID=2633&productId=27314&state_2838=2 Duke Ellington: My People Cat No#: 1018430 Series: Format: CD Artist: Duke Ellington Price: €23.10 $24.70 £13.99 DKK155.20 Duke Ellington’s ‘My People’ opened in Chicago August 16, 1963. Duke Ellington did everything. He wrote the music, the words, directed it and did the orchestrations. There were not enough money involved to hire Duke Ellington’s orchestra. Instead they hired a 16 piece orchestra with Jimmy Jones as the pianist. A recording of the show was made on August 20, 21 and 28 supervised by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. The CD contains for the fi rst time the complete show. Duke Ellington in ’My People’ chose the strategy to emphasize the positive achievements of black people to America life, rather than protest against injustice. It had only one minute of social protest written into its script. ‘My People’ is not political. It has social signifi cance, but the accent will be on entertainment.
  4. Rhythm compositions can and are copyright protected. There are many compositionsthat are totally rhythm and have been registered and copywritten. There are films where I have written and copy wriiten my works plus publish it. There is one universal rhythm pattern for all countries in the world other then African and or African-American patterns, of this there is no doubt. This is not a quiz but a research as to whom I could communicate with , about this subject. This I have mentioned in earlier notes here on this site. As for being afraid to share, there is no fear in me to share my findingd here or anywhere. It would seem that there is no understanding, that is mutual about the meaning of "swing," and or "clave."
  5. Well, they don't seem to be "in clave" to do anyone any good.
  6. Well in this disccussion, first let me say that 12/8 or 12/16 would still have the music in 4/4. Therefore as I said earlier all "swing" for the so-called "jazz" bands normally are written in 2/2. Of corurse I do no how to notate it correctly, as I'm trying to see should there be some else among us who has made this discovery. At this time I will not give up this information, adding that the time meters in the "NomenClature" system, or "table Of Notation," all the given time meters are all the same, meaning no matter what the number looks like they are all in 4/4. This should bring on other points of interest here, when a parent will say to the teacher, "why dosen't my Johnny swing?" As for" your example by your colleauge in DJembe, even the African cannot notate what he is playing, and unless the transcriber of these rhythms knows the "true Clave" meter, he/we cannot compose it correctly. In other words again I repeat 4/4 is not a universal "standard" time meter.
  7. Well firstly, all swing scores are wriiten not in 4/4 and never with tripolets of any of the two forms, open triplet and or closed triplet. Your answer is what is out there, and what is out there by musicologist and the likes , still have not come up with a non-hybrid form of "swing(clave)" in any correct notation. Good answer however.
  8. Greetings, Should any member need help with these Storyville records, i am in contact with them as late as last Monday, here in Danmark. As I have the honor to be on two of the CDs "Duke" Elingtons The Jaywalker, and Thad Jones Eclipes. You may contact me should anyone have difficuty finding them, and I will contact Storyville direct. The notes on Ellingtons JayWalker CD are quoted from the interview they had with me. Musically, Juan Amalbert A K A Emmanuel Rahim, Emmanuel Abdul-Rahim

  11. Thank you all I found you while makeing a search of my own recordings on thru Google. It's my honor to be among all of you. As for "Swing" it's a cover word for a time signature or time meter. As for the quote by mr A. S., the one musician mentioned by Joseph P. Schillinger, who by the way was mr. Artie S. teacher, said that "Duke" Ellington is the "Master" of pure swing. This may be found in his books , The Schillinger System Of Musical Composition copyright 1941. As for Clave it's a latin word, may I suggest that every musician should check out its meaning. After that I may try and help all to understand its importance in all musics. Any help that I can give a member please, contact me. Best regards to all.
