Charles Tolliver - Connect (Gearbox Records)

    Charles Tolliver - trumpet
    Jesse Davis - alto saxophone
    Binker Golding - tenor saxophone (A2 + B2)
    Keith Brown - piano
    Buster Williams - double bass
    Lenny White - drums

Playing the Tolliver LP myself tonight. The record is more vibrant than the CD.

    Also playing some Miles tonight.

  2. On my wishlist is getting a new box for the Andrew Hill set. This set was made at a time when Mosaic taped the hinge between top lid and bottom.

Then they printed the name of the set on the back of the tape.

After repeated use, and countless openings and closings, the tape has splintered and the box top looks awful.

We're not talking about another reissue, or a quartet recording of jazz standards. It's the culmination of a years-long effort by a large cast of impeccable musicians to create an original and lasting piece of art. Purchasing this set also helps insure that Maria can continue to compose, arrange and conduct music that makes a difference to some of us. As someone who contributed more than the minimum to make this project possible, I have no regrets and will continue to support Maria every chance I get.

I have not missed any of her releases either, This set is likely the best yet. Worth every penny!

I just finished my listening.  I think it is very good, the writing and arranging and rhythm section are excellent, and Tolliver plays well (you can tell the ideas are still there, and he sounds great for 77 years old, but is not the dynamo he was 50 years ago, of course).  The sax players are fine, though not memorable to me.  I'm really glad to have it and will revisit it many times, but "The Ringer", the Slug's and Loosdrecht live recordings, and the first Big Band album will remain my Tolliver first call go-to's.

    A fair review !

I would agree with ranking of "go to" recordings as well. But I will enjoy "Connect" nonetheless.

I was at the Friday gig at An Die, it was great. Last time I was there, but I am watching their live streams.

Alas, I was at the Saturday gig. Got to spend some quality time with Charles Tolliver though. Nice guy!

‘Connect’ is definitely a winner. Tolliver plays with conviction and style and his compositions are soulful and first rate, Williams is his usual rock solid groove on bass, Lenny White full of fire and pianist Keith Brown, for me probably the unexpected standout. Jesse Davis excellent too. A real ace card by adding ‘local’ Binker Golding on two tracks - fits in brilliantly and plays with passion, really digging in.

    A winner all round. :tup

(Sorry if all that sounds a bit ‘Dusty Groove’ but it is good !)

Agree with this review. Tolliver is solid throughout and I really enjoy the version of "Emperor March". Saw this group play in An Die Musik in Baltimore at the end of February and this new CD is very evocative of that set. Highly recommended!

I love what it is that he does.  Don’t know what to call it, don’t care — I love it.  Thanks to Tim Webb for convincing me to give this album a try.  I had seen some videos from their tour, and they didn’t do what I’d hope they would.  Not sure if it was the recordings, or just a couple of off nights, but THIS is what I was expecting.  LOVE Alex Harding.  THE man on the big horn, at the moment.   This is not the best track on the album, but I was tryiing to be time conscious (particularly where there were already several other long tracks).

Also LOVE Kahil El Zabar. Have seen him perform in many different groups. Never disappoints. Hard to categorize his style, but certainly enjoyable!

I believe he's more important than you think. Worth exploring.

He's a major jazz musician, not a minor one. The place to start is the Mosaic set, or to put your toe in the water first, Cross-Country Tour.

He's also still alive and producing excellent recordings at an advanced age (currently 89). For example, Ballades (solo and duo) from 2019 and Marseille from 2016.

To me, a VERY major figure.

Not to say I like everything he does, but I celebrate his style. Very idiosyncratic. Instantly recognizable from the beginning that it is Jamal playing.

  9. Saw him many times over the past 10 years as he made Pittsburgh his home.

He was definitely a "cool enough guy"

Will be missed. Was beloved in the community as well.
