Last week, Gebhard Ullmann dropped by Blue Lake Public Radio for his 4th appearance live from our studios. This time the Berlin-based tenor saxophonist/bass clarinetist brought with him a band he's played with for 20 years, Conference Call, with Michael Jefry Stevens, piano; Joe Fonda, bass, and Dieter Ulrich on drums. The album includes a duet with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane dedicated to Rashied Ali. DeJohnette says, "Ravi came up with that melody. Pianist/arranger Mary Lou Williams caught a break in 1931 when Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy pianist didn't show for a recording session. She became one of the band's featured soloists, then eventually wrote music for Benny Goodman (she introduced him to Charlie Christian, he invited her to play his 40th anniversary Carnegie Hall concert). Since creating the original film score for the 2014 film “Birdman,” drummer Antonio Sanchez issued two albums, a double CD of three trios playing three original pieces or Sanchez arrangements of jazz standards, and a suite or music composed for his ensemble Migration. Have you listened to Dizzy Gillespie's big band music of the 1940's? On July 9, 1946 Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra recorded one of the most hair raising big band recordings ever, Gil Fuller's adaptation of the small band composition called "Bebop" as "Things To Come."
