jazz1 Posted May 30, 2004 Report Posted May 30, 2004 I think that times has arrived to recognize real talent. When it comes to jazz singing, very few can compare to Jay Clayton I was glad to see that her cd "Circle dancing" made the top 30's in Down Beat best jazz vocal recordings ever. (It is one of my favorite too) She is one the the few artist alive that made the list. Even motre important is that the top 30 list was selected by jazz vocalists. Any comments?? Thanks jazz1 Quote
mikeweil Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 I've always liked her trimbre and phrasing, and she scats well. Has a very nice way of experimenting without hitting extremes. I have a few of her records, most of them are probably very rare, there's even a self-produced LP among them "All Out", a duet with drummer Jerry Granelli, a live reording in a modern bop vein made in Seattle, and a Vocal Summit CD, etc. Sure deserves more credit than she got! clandy44 Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 I enjoy her work and think she is one of the many overlooked artists with genuine talent. Especially like Beautiful Love, a 1994 album with Fred Hersch. Quote
jazz1 Posted June 2, 2004 Author Report Posted June 2, 2004 I enjoy her work and think she is one of the many overlooked artists with genuine talent. Especially like Beautiful Love, a 1994 album with Fred Hersch. Try "Circle dancing" an amazing cd where she does it all. Straight ballad singing, daring improvisations, but always remaining musical. One of the great vocal cd of our time and the backing musicians are top notch. "Beautiful Love" is a great cd too. Listening to Jay, one can hear how many of today's singers have taken cues from her teaching. Quote
