ejp626 Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I was in Borders the other day, trying to find a use for my 25% off coupon, when I stumbled across this album: David Murray & the Gwo-ka Masters featuring Pharoah Sanders Gwotet on the Justin Time label. I'm playing it now, so I will have more impressions soon, but I like the interplay of Murray and Sanders over a very funky rhythm section -- a lot of electric guitar too. Sanders is only mentioned on three tracks, so that is probably the extent of his playing. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else had this and was enjoying it. Eric Quote
alankin Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 I have it and am enjoying it. The combination of musicians could well have brought on a train wreck, but it does seem to hang together. And I just learned that the group will be playing in Philadelphia on 6/23! Quote
JohnS Posted June 18, 2004 Report Posted June 18, 2004 This is the only cd I bought during my recent US holiday. It's excellent, probably the best of Murray's various Creole/Senegalese/Latin projects. A lot of the credit goes to Hamid Drake for anchoring the whole thing and the driving horn arrangements. I haven't heard very much of Pharoah Sanders recent work but he sounds fired up here and enjoying the experience. After hearing this I regret missing, for family reasons, the concert in May last year at The Brighton Dome (about 50 miles from here) by Murray and Sanders with the smaller Gwo-Ka Masters group. JSngry Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Heard it yesterday. It's a darn good'un. Quote

RDK Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I don't know Charlie either, but I understand he don't surf... Quote
.:.impossible Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I've heard good things about Laviso, the electric guitarist. I didn't realize that Pharoah Sanders was on this. I also didn't realize Hamid Drake was on this. Is there another drummer as well? Quote
JSngry Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 hey jim, who's charlie? (i'm old enuf to know that this is not viet-nam war slang--right?) Right! Charlie is my 18 year old son. He like that screaming kind of alternative rock, and stuff like Jaga Jazzist, Erik Trufazz, Antebalas. And Maynard Ferguson. Quite an eclectic, the boy is. Quote

JohnS Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Impossible, Pharoah's on three tracks. Drake is the only trap drummer. Klod Kiavue and Francois Ladrezeau play ka and boula drum respectively. Quote
