Rooster_Ties Posted June 19, 2004 Report Posted June 19, 2004 (edited) Just got tickets to go see David Byrne here in Kansas City on Sept. 15th. I was on the fence about going (cuz of the ticket prices, $35 to $40 per person, plus the TicketBastard™ charges), but I noticed in the ad in the free-weekly paper that he was going to have a string section with him (presumably the same group I saw him with when he was on Austin City Limits (on PBS) two or three years ago, which was a string sextet consisting of three violins, one viola, and two celli). Actually, doing a quick search, here's a picture of the group, including the strings... And here's a blurb about the string section... At the same time, it expands his use of strings via the Tosca Strings, an Austin-based ensemble that made a name for itself playing tangos in rock clubs. Chamber-rock is nothing new, of course, but it's new to Byrne, and, he says, "I love it, and I love it in performing, too [the Tosca Strings were part of his last tour]. There's a lot more that can be done with it that I haven't touched on." Another pic, with the strings... Edited June 19, 2004 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 19, 2004 Author Report Posted June 19, 2004 PS: Ever since I saw that Bynre show on Austin City Limits, I've kinda had my eye out for some sort of bootleg of that show. (I wish I had taped it.) The arrangements of the Talking Heads tunes with the strings were simply amazing. If anybody has any tapes from Byrne's recent tours, specifically with the string section, I'd be very interested. Thanks!!! Quote
Pete C Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 I don't know which I'd find more annoying: Byrne or the string section. He does, however, have great taste in music and has put out some wonderful albums on Luaka Bop. Quote

Take the Beck/Flaming Lips episode, for example. That one's on all the time. (I was at that taping, by the way. B)) As for seeing Byrne, I saw him in Lawrence, KS in 1997. I remember it was in support of the Feelings record. Great show. Lot's of energy and several costume changes on the part of Byrne. One of them was a "Slim Goodbody"-esque leotard complete with muscles, veins, organs, etc. I'm not the kind of guy who goes to a show to be wowed by "entertainment". I just want to hear the songs. But, in this case, the extras added to the merriment. Haven't heard the new record but I imagine the mood will be a little less celebratory this time around. Have fun! Quote
