John L Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 (edited) Almost everyone in jazz has played on some recorded version of Body and Soul. But what about Miles? I don't think that I have a single recording in my collection of Miles on Body and Soul. The match would have been so perfect. Edited July 26, 2004 by John L Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 Yes, January 17, 1949 in a radio jam session with Buddy DeFranco, Lucky Thompson, Charlie Ventura, Kai Winding, Al Haig, Oscar Pettiford, and Shelly Manne. Issued on Royal Jazz. Mike Quote
John L Posted July 26, 2004 Author Report Posted July 26, 2004 Thanks, Michael! I'll have to look for that! John Quote
brownie Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 (edited) John, no need to look for that CD if you want to hear Miles Davis play 'Body and Soul' because he is not to be heard on that one. The 'Body and Soul' version from this January 17, 1949 date is a feature for Charlie Ventura on baritone with the rhythm section. The rest of the group shows up at the very last second of the interpretation for a final single note. The Royal Jazz release 'Miles Davis Nonet 1948 - Jam 1949' has six titles from the Miles Davis Birth of the Cool broadcasts from the Royal Roost that have been reissued dozens of time by now. The rest of that RJ is a 26-minute WPIX telecast with the Miles, Winding, Unlucky, Haig, Pettiford and Manne group that also includes a Teddy Wilson feature on 'Fine and Dandy' plus that 'Body and Soul'. Wish there was some footage from that telecast still visible! Edited July 26, 2004 by brownie Quote
Claude Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 John, there is a database on Pete Losin's "miles Ahead" website where one can search for tunes http://www.plosin.com/milesAhead/query.asp The only occurence of "body and soul" is indeed the one mentioned by Mike and Brownie. Quote
