sal Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 I thought I read somewhere that McCoy Tyner is going to be touring with a new trio featuring Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham. Anyone hear anything about this? I know that he's slated to play the Jazz Showcase later this year, but he already played the Showcase this year with Charnet Moffett and Eric Harland, so I'm assuming that he's playing with different cats this time around. I personally think that the prospect of a trio with Clarke and Cobham sounds exciting. Those are two cats with HUGE jazz chops, but who don't play much jazz these days. I think this could give their careers a bit of a "kick in the ass" if you will, at least in the jazz arena. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 I would go see this band in a heart beat. Quote
robviti Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 personally, i've enjoyed mccoy's association with bassist george mraz in recent years. to my ears, mccoy has been playing less cluttered lines lately that sound more thoughtful and fully-developed than his famous "ham-fisted" style of yore. i think mraz's spare, infinately melodic accompaniment complements this shift in mccoy's playing. i wonder if this newer trio will have the same dynamic. i've always associated clarke with a busier, more flamboyant approach to the bass, a style that was copied by the lesser avery sharpe, mccoy's bassist for many years. then again, cobham is known as something of a "basher," which also seems to be mccoy's preference in terms of drummers. just once i'd like to hear mccoy perform live in a solo format so i can fully appreciate the depth and breadth of his artistry. Pete C Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 Moffett & Harland are his current working trio mates, but he always does special all-star gigs & tours. Quote
