sheldonm Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 I just received a note from ebay saying my account could have been compromised. This email looks "official" but when I click on the link, it's asking for lots of info including my credit card info, ss # and other items. Is this legit? It says in order to protect my account, they will close it in 72 hours if I don't respond....what do you guys think? I've had no issues on ebay, even making a couple transactions in the past few days with no problem. Thanks, Mark Quote
Big Wheel Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Almost certainly a scam. Are you sure the link you click sends you to an ebay web page, or is it a subtly different URL? Quote
Spontooneous Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 You've been "phished." Same happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Forward the e-mail to spoof@ebay.com and they'll investigate. Quote
sheldonm Posted September 6, 2004 Author Report Posted September 6, 2004 Thanks guys! I went as far as clicking on the link to see that they were looking for private info and then logged off. I sent a note to ebay. What assholes ! Quote
Shrdlu Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 Mark, I get these emails all the time about eBay and Paypal. They look very realistic. Pass them on to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com NEVER respond to such an email and give personal details. [The problem is, what happens if eBay sends a legitimate message? I automatically delete all of these emails.] But, my eBay ID has been stolen twice! Each time, I have contacted them through their "chat room" facility, that is, you get a real person dealing with you. After a few questions, they have re-set my account, and all is well. They usually ask me to give a new email address when they reinstate me, so be ready in advance with one. Quote

Claude Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 [The problem is, what happens if eBay sends a legitimate message? I automatically delete all of these emails.] Ebay Germany sent out emails 5 days ago asking certain members (sellers) to fill in their telephone details. This email came just after a wave of scam emails, and so most people thought it wasn't from Ebay. Strangely, Ebay chose the same text as many scam emails, saying the Ebay account would be suspended if no action was taken. eBay: Kein Handel ohne Rufnummer (german news) Quote
sheldonm Posted September 6, 2004 Author Report Posted September 6, 2004 I sent a note to both ebay and paypal. Both quickly responded back that there are no problems with my account and these notes appear to be a scam! Thanks for all of your input, I appreciate it! Mark Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 But, my eBay ID has been stolen twice! You've got to change your password. "Saved by Jesus" is just too common to use... (No insult intended shrdlu) Quote

BERIGAN Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 I am getting 3-4 of these emails a day now...I do notice that the fake emails may have my email address, but they don't know the name, just say, dear ebay user. IF ebay, or Paypal does send a "real" email to me, they use my name. What is funny, is that even the real emails have links that have fake looking addresses! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 I've been getting them from banks lately. Of course, no one's guessed the right bank yet, so it's pretty easy to tell they're scams... Quote
JohnS Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 Yeah, I had this on too. I see there's one in my spam box today purporting to be from Paypal. I used to forward them to ebay but it happens so frequently I no longer bother. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 I get them all the time as well, but I always forward them to ebay. I want these slugs to be prosecuted or at least put out of business...they hurt e-commerce. Quote

In fact someone named connoisseur series500 sent me one trying to sell me a Dexter Gordon cd called Misty......oh, wait a minute, that was you......or was it . Quote
Leeway Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 Thanks guys! I went as far as clicking on the link to see that they were looking for private info and then logged off. I sent a note to ebay. What assholes ! When you clink on the link, you might open your computer to a virus or trojan (NOT that kind) horse. Usually these sites will try to plant some kind of virus through the link. Ever get those spam mails that say, "to remove yourself from the mailing list, click on the link," well, when you do that, you will often pick up a virus from the spammer. One should have good anti-virus, personal firewall protection on PC. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 Well...I don't know about that; I've heard a lot of odd charges of how viruses are transmitted, but it almost always boils down to opening an attachment. I never click on those "remove me from your spam" links primarily because I don't want them to know that it got through and that they've found a valid email address. Quote
