EKE BBB Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 In the July 1965 issue of an old Swedish/Norwegian magazine called "Jazznytt" there is an interesting interview with Ben Webster recalling the famous May 4, 1940 recording session of Cottontail for RCA-Victor: "Duke told us we should only play it as a rehearsal, while the studio technicians where trying to set the correct balance for the later recording. I played my solo without putting too much into it. But when we were finished playing, Duke had a good laugh and told us to get our things together - we were through for the day. He had asked the technicians to record it. I was really angry - this wasn't the way I had planned my solo routines. ( Ben admitted the result was actually very good - may be even better that way without having to concentrate on playing for a recording.)" Quote
