I absolutely love this set. It's a fantastic document of a festival from the point of view of Duke and Ella's sets there. Amazing music, great sound, and a great booklet too. I KNOW that this is right up your alley, so put it on your list and keep an eye out for bargains. (I'll alert you if my eye sees any.)

Thanks, man--I don't think I can ever have enough Duke! I'd been contemplating the 2-CD set, but I think I'll skip it and wait for the box.

Verve put out so many great boxes in the mid-to-late 90's--the Bud Powell, the JATP, the Lester Young, this one... I realize it's a financially precarious practice (didn't they supposedly take a bath on the Young?), so I hope they continue to occasionally farm sets out to Mosaic (the Hodges, Roach, now the Mulligan and Eldridge).

An excellent box that should rightfully be under Duke's name with the little amount that Ella is on it in comparision to Duke.

I just checked I haven't listened to anything from this box in a year. Will be listening to it this coming week.

Wonderful box (another two cents). If the house catches fire, this is one of the first things that will make it to safety.

“Cotton Tail” with Ella and the nearly 10 minute “The Jam” with Webster are highlights, but it’s worth mentioning that there’s lots of repetition within the set. Nor is there much difference between the first and forth version of “Such Sweet Thunder,” for example. Still, I could easily spend a day doing nothing but alternating disks between this set and Mile’s Plugged Nickel recordings (how’s that for juxtaposition?).

I bought the two CD set years ago. I´ve been a bit reluctant to this set for a long time. Maybe it was Ella´s pop approach in some themes (Goin´ out of my head and others) maybe it was Cat Anderson´s high notes that caught my nerves.

But recently I´ve become a very huge fan of it (it´s always in my car stereo at the highest volume) and enjoy gems like Things ain´t what they used to be, Lullaby of Birdland...and little heard gems like Trombonio-bustoso-issimo or The old circus train turn-around blues

And I´m considering to buy the complete set.....if I ever find it at a reasonable price :(

I picked this up at work for around $60 (back when they had such deals). I agree that this is a fabulous set. I really love this period of Duke's band (at least live) and both Duke and ella appear to be having a great time. A big thumbs up!
