GregK Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 (edited) Anyone interested in checking out how good these guys are playing should go to hittinthenote.com and pre-order an Instant Live or two from this summer's tour. Derek Trucks has been dropping lots of Coltrane references in his solos lately (Afro-Blue and My Favorite Things pop up a lot in their jams), and from what I've read the weekend at the Fox in Atlanta is smokin!! I know, this sounds like spam, but Donny Osmond isn't found anywhere on these shows! And it's not Universal...... Edited November 7, 2004 by GregK Quote
PHILLYQ Posted November 9, 2004 Report Posted November 9, 2004 Greg, I thank you for posting this, but my wallet is not very happy- seems as though there's too much $ flying out, particularly when it comes to ABB lately. I picked up 9/25/04 on Ebay- IT SMOKES!!!! It includes Layla, Key to the Highway, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, etc. Quote

I hate to say it but most likely you would have paid less directly from the band's site. I can't wait to hear their version of Dixie. What I'm really looking forward to though is how Derek is incorporating more and more jazz into his playing, like I mentioned above. I read somewhere that on the tour bus (for his own band's tour this fall) he had a lot of Coltrane and Footprints Live by Wayne Shorter playing. Quote
Sundog Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 The 9/1 show in Chicago, at the Rosemont Theatre, included Derek and Oteil jamming on a nice interlude during Instrumental Illness which featured the bass line to Footprints. I've heard tapes from about 15 shows from this tour and there isn't a bad one in the bunch. I will be buying a number of these at Instant Live. If your not sure where to start, buy the Altanta shows at the Fox Theatre. The descriptions of the shows at "Hittin The Note" are pretty representative of the content. Enjoy! Quote

How did you hear 15 shows? I am really excited about this. I'm trying to resist buying any more shows- I have 5 on order now. Since it's a limited production I may add one or two more, but can't decide which ones Quote
Sundog Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 One of my bandmates has a buddy who's a big time tape trader and recording hobbist. He specializes in the ABB and is very well know in the ABB community. Every so often my buddy brings me 3-4 cdr's of ABB shows to listen to. I've been very lucky lately since he has been able to hook me up with some very recent shows from the tour. Of course the quality varies since they were all recorded from somewhere on the floor. Surprisingly, the quality has ranged from fairly good to excellent amateur recordings. Not as good as Instant Live but then again they are more or less free. Additionally, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the Chicago show at the Rosemont Theatre. This is a very bluesy take no prisoners show. I have the Instant Live Recording from this show and it's very good. If you like that aspect of the ABB I would pick this one up. I'll probably pick up somewhere around 10. What a great concept these Instant Live "chaps" have. I believe 11/28 is the cut off for preorders, so if your on the fence, and you want to be sure of getting certain shows, now's the time. I may just get a wild hair this weekend and order the whole damn bunch. Quote
GregK Posted November 25, 2004 Author Report Posted November 25, 2004 I have the Fox run on order, Mansfield MA and the Rosemont you are referring to. I can't decide what else to add-I really love it when they move closer to jazz territory, like on the longer versions of Desdemona and Elizabeth Reed. I was thinking of adding the Atlantic City show since they describe Desdemona as being "very jazzy"-what that means I'm not quite sure but it may just what I'm looking for. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 I went nuts and ordered the three Atlanta shows and a six-pack that's called the pick of the litter(?) or something like that. Nine shows, about 27 discs, I'm checking the mail very carefully now! Quote

Nine shows, about 27 discs, I'm checking the mail very carefully now! Oh man, I went somewhat nuts too-that Fox box, Rosemont, Mansfield, Charlotte, Knoxville, Jones Beach and Atlantic City-9 in all! I don't expect them to arrive until after the New Year though. The last batch (for 2003) didn't arrive until 2 months after the pre-order ended. It's a very small family-run company so it understandably takes them quite a while to ship all of these out. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 On the 9/25 show, Derek Trucks also quotes Rahsaan Roland Kirk's 'Volunteered Slavery'. He also plays it on his double live disc. Quote
