ghost of miles Posted November 9, 2004 Author Report Posted November 9, 2004 Sorry--meant to post the article about Jack Johnson in the NY Review of Books. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 Haven't read the article posted by Ghost yet, but Jack Johnson was a very interesting guy. He brought out some of the ugliness of this country. The nation hated him and looked ugly in the process. He was a great fighter, but he was also a great character. Like Muhammed Ali, he transcended the sport. I look forward to the documentary. I'll probably read the book as well. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 Excellent article, Ghost! I've read Joyce Carol Oates before. I think she wrote a book called, "On Boxing," or something similar. She's America's greatest boxing writer. Her rather demeaning comments about Ali are slightly puzzling; but Jack Johnson was something else! Quote
Chrome Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 Anyone care to guess who composed the music for the film? Quote
jazzypaul Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 ummm...ummm...gimme a second...I'll get it...right on the tip of my tongue...sheesh...who is it? He's got a box set or two out these days...damn... Quote
jazzypaul Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 by the way, Ghost, thanks for the fascinating article. I'm a huge fan of boxing, and Jack was one of its greatest characters...thanks again... Quote
BERIGAN Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Unlike Ali, whose IQ was once registered as an astonishing 78, and who is said to have been able to read but a small fraction of the voluminous praise and censure heaped on him over the years Whaaa????????? You could love Ali, or hate him...but to act like he was in any way, shape or form stupid(except of course for fighting one too many times)...is well, stupid! He must have said no to Joyce, and she has never forgiven him. Quote

I'm a huge fan of boxing, and Jack was one of its greatest characters...thanks again... Hey, no problem--I thought a number of posters here would be interested in it. Ironically enough, I'd dug out my Miles JACK JOHNSON box and started listening to it just a couple of days before I saw the article and learned about the new documentary. I'm going to do a Night Lights show in January based around the box and Davis' admiration for JJ. Anybody seen the original film for which he did the music? I seem to recall reading (maybe in the JJ box thread) that the filmmakers didn't end up using that much of it. Quote
