Herb Alpert once saw Miles Davis perform with what Alpert called the dream group: John Coltrane, Red Garland, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, and Cannonball Adderley.

"They played a two-night concert in L.A.," Alpert recalled. "I was there on the Friday night and it was the most spectacular experience I ever had watching and listening to jazz. So I called all of my friends who I thought would appreciate the music and brought them on Saturday. And? It was the worst f---ing sound I've ever heard in my life!Miles was off, nobody was into playing," Alpert explained. "I'm not kidding, man, in twenty-four hours it went from the greatest experience in jazz to, like, I couldn't believe I was listening to the same group. Miles played a couple of notes, went in the kitchen and got stoned or whatever he was doing - I don't know... It was embarrassing. All of my friends were wondering where I was at."

[allegedly] from the Rolling Stone interview.
