Picked up these from CDuniverse -- breaking my self imposed ban on bying, but that went down the toilet with the BMG sale  . Listened to three out of the four newly remastered reissues: Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Ege Bamyasi, Tago Mago. They all sound excellent -- full, spatial, and with a lot of punch. This band was easily 20 years ahead of its time, but they did not confine themselves to one style or sound -- each album is different than the other, yet looking at the four you can hear the development of a band from late 60's psych/prog rock to something beyond all that, eventually incorporating music from all corners of the world. Soundtracks is my favorite so far, maybe because it reminds me so much of what Sonic Youth did on Daydream Nation, and on their most recent cds -- long tunes that ue rhythms, drones, even a little jazz. It says a lot when one can hear the sounds of bands that came after this group -- these are recommended to rock and jazz fans alike.

Listening to Tago Mago -- man, this is FUNKY!!!!!

to me, most CAN albums are ruined by that one long experimental song. tago mago, ege bamyasi and landed, off the top of my head, are marred to me, by one long avant piece.

Thanks Clem, I'll just stick with my current Can cds. I've got a few of the albums on vinyl already, so I'm set.

Delay 1968 is great. I DIG Malcolm Mooney. :tup

I've got all the Can albums, but Ege Bamyasi is the last one I really liked. Give me Delay 1968, Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Tago Mago and I'm a happy cat. Oh yeah, I do love the track "Gommorha" off Unlimited Edition.

Speaking of Can, since I'm a little younger than some around here, I only discovered them in 1989. My first exposure came through a band called Loop who did a cover of "Mother Sky" - back then, Loop and Spacemen 3 rocked my world. Any Loop fans here?

We need a Krautrock Korner around here... There's got to be some Cosmic Jokers fans around here.

future days is my favorite CAN album. doesn't have a long avante experimental song. just has good layered spacy futuristic music.

i have a bunch of live stuff. there is usually some good stuff on bt.easytree.org

i like the live stuff a lot that i have heard though for different reasons than the studio stuff.

the live stuff i like for the unrelenting shifting grooves, whereas the studio stuff i like for the highyl layered nature of the music and the subtle and complimentary interactions of the musicians which are sort of lost on the live stuff for a more powerful approach.

i would recommend checking out any live can. i have even heard some with a vocalist i didn't know played with CAN (michael cousins?) from '76 which i liked.

i do not recommend the official live can release just because i do not think this mishmash of years approach is the best way to check live CAN out.

akanalog,

I'll have to give Future Days another listen. I've been guilty of the past in not giving an album a chance to grow on me before I file it away.

I love "spacey", so it's got to be good.

I'll look for some live stuff. Thanks for the info. I do have a Can bootleg called Mother Sky, but the sound quality is awful.

Oh yeah, I do love the track "Gommorha" off Unlimited Edition.

There's a bonus track on the CD reissue of This Nation's Saving Grace by The Fall called "I am Damo Suzuki" and it's basically a cover of "Gommorha". Lyrics are basically a name-check of Can tunes. (Ex: "What have you got in that paper bag? Is it a dose of Vitamin C? I am Damo Suzuki...")

BTW: To the delight of the over-30 crowd at their Austin, TX show this summer, The Fall actually played this song. Probably the last tune anyone expected to hear that night and it absolutely f*cking killed!
