Big Al Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 After reading the notes to the Granz Jam Sessions on Verve box, I got the impression that Granz held similar jams on his Pablo label in the 70's. I know that a bunch are available on the OJC label, so are there any worth getting? Quote
BeBop Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 If this includes the "Basie Jam"s, I'd answer "yes". Quote
wolff Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 (edited) There are the 3 Basie Jams. Other than that, I do not know of any others except the Montreux '77 jams. Edited January 5, 2005 by wolff Quote
JSngry Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Regardless of how they were billed, pretty much every Joe Turner Pablo album was a jam session. This one might not be good, but it is definitely GREAT: Call the plumber!!! Quote
wolff Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 (edited) I thought of the Turner's, also. Joe Turner with The Trumpet Kings is also jam-like, but I do not think I'd recommend it. Turner's Life Ain't Easy is a good one. The Trumpet Summit(Hubbard/Terry/Gillespie) is a decent jam in the Verve tradition. I'd recommend it for a couple tunes. Kick the front door in! BeBop Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 I've got several of the Montreux 'jams': OP? Benny Carter? Joe Pass? (Sorry, they're not with me.) The Basie's the only one I remember fondly (non-Montreux, as I recall.) Quote
marcello Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 This is a good one for the fireworks on Ali and Frazier! Montreux '77: Oscar Peterson Jam (Pablo Live 2308 208) Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry (tp) Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis (ts) Oscar Peterson (p) Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (b) Bobby Durham (d) 'Montreux Jazz Festival', "Casino de Montreux", Switzerland, July 14, 1977 Ali and Frazier If I Were a Bell Things Ain't What They Used to Be Just in Time ** also issued on Fantasy OJC 378.
