Chuck Nessa Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 Over the last couple of days I've been listening to Mr T's Dearly Beloved and tho "Little Miss Cott" is on the organ, there is no bass player. It has been my experience, her records usually have one of those guys. Is she a "knucklehead" on the pedals, or what is going on? Quote
Stereojack Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 Scott seems to always use a bass player on her sessions - often the great George Duvivier - which made me think less of her for years. A while back someone recommended her album "One For Me" (Strata East 7430), on which she doesn't use a bass player, and her playing seems pretty solid to these ears. Will have to give this and the Turrentine album another listen soon.... jack Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 (edited) Why Scott was always SADDLED with bass players I'll never know. She plays the hell out of the organ bass and always could. Here' a quote from Jimmy McGriff about Shirley Scott's bass capabilities...(and this was prior to McGriff really making much of a mark on the organ himself at the time).. Shirley would come up and play with her trio, wowing the crowds wherever she went. See, Shirley had a rough sound. A man's sound. But at the same time she had a woman's touch. She'd take her shoes off and just tear it up. Edited February 12, 2005 by Soul Stream Quote

Soul Stream Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 All I know is my 2 favorite albums w/Shirley Scott are One For Me and Turrentine's Dearly Beloved. She's a monster on organ bass. Check her out on Yesterdays on DB. Wow. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 Wish I had the Cadence interview of her handy - v.1 n.9. I suspect that question would have come up. If no one has it, I'll try to remember to check next week. Here's a quote from the Fantasy website: "Though she let her feet do the bass-line walking when playing live, "Scottie" preferred to use a bassist when in the studio, and in George Duvivier she had one of the finest and most flexible." Soul Stream Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 I know that in her liner notes for "One For Me" she said that on this album she finally got to do what she wanted. Thus the title. Wonder if part of that meant playing her own bass. Quote
