tranemonk Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 I am so impressed with this music... I must admit two musicians who are standing out to me - who I didn't know that well prior to this set... are Barney Kessel and Flip Phillips.. Wow!!! Did anyone get the Flip Phillips Mosiac set from years back???? What Cd's would you guys recommend as the best works of Kessel and Phillips (seperately)? Quote
AfricaBrass Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 Yeah, I dig Flip too. I bought the Mosaic set right before they were gone... If you can find the Verve compilation, you'll get a great sample of his Verve work: Flip Wails: The Best of the Verve Years The Verve album he released, before his passing, was good. He sure didn't sound like he was 85 years old. Swing Is the Thing! Quote
AfricaBrass Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 For Kessel, I'd say to check out any of his recordings for Contemporary from the fifties and also look for those Poll Winners albums from the same period. There are a bunch of OJC's of this material. His album, Feeling Free, from 1969 had Bobby Hutcherson and Elvin Jones on it. He also appeared on a lot of albums as a sideman. I'd investigate those also. Allmusic.com has a list (under the Credits tab) of albums he appeared on. I wouldn't be surprised if that list is far from complete. Quote
Free For All Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 There's this...... which is also available on DVD I believe. Carl Fontana is on it too. Quote
