Soulstation1 Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 i don't own this cd, but this will make me purchase it any fav songs or solos? ss1 Quote
Big Al Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 Ohhhhhh YEAH!!! Jimmy Smith and Stanley Turrentine, how can you go wrong? The title track is worth the price of admission alone. Admittedly, it's built around the same sweet shuffle beat that made "Back at the Chicken Shack" so greeeazy; however, one can never have enough of a good thing like this! Taken together with Back at the Chicken Shack and Midnight Special, well, a more perfect trifecta may not exist! Quote
sal Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 Only listened to it about 3 times since I bought the RVG when it first came out, but I really enjoy this session. Jimmy and Stanley were like Corona's and limes. Quote

Harold_Z Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I love this disc, but my problem is that I can't think of anything much different to say than what I said about Chicken Shack. This is a good reminder to listen to this disc again - I haven't in a while. Quote
Soul Stream Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I like this session a lot. Stone Cold Dead In The Market is a particular favorite. I just love the relaxed vibe of the session. This is my favorite "era" of Jimmy....not the flashy Jimmy we get on Organ Grinder Swing or Smalls. This is Jimmy keepin it really, really, really in the pocket and letting the tone of Rudy's beautiful C3 be heard. As far as TONE goes, the Hammond has just never sounded better than on these sessions imho. Some dismiss this and Rockin' the Boat as throw-offs to fulfill Jimmy's BN contract. I don't know what that situation was..but "I almost Lost My Mind" doesn't sound like anybody treading water. LOVE the tambourine on this stuff too. The new liners say it was Big John Patton, don't know if I believe that, but it's a good story. Quote
Big Al Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 Some dismiss this and Rockin' the Boat as throw-offs to fulfill Jimmy's BN contract. Yeah, I read that. For me, that holds true for Rockin'; never could warm up to that one. But Prayer Meetin' is more great in-the-pocket grooves, and as you pointed out, this is a prime era of JOS. Couldn't tell you why one session sounds better to these ears than the other! Quote
