David Ayers Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 My work just bought me a new PC - great. But the flat screen monitor is fuzzy as hell and the colors are terrible. Do I get the idea that the supplier is palming us off with junk or are these flat screens often like this? Should I keep it or kick up a fuss to get it replaced? Quote

Don't know much about flat screens, just have seen a few in stores...they seemed a bit blurry from an angle...but if you find it blurry now, better complain now, rather than wait a few weeks...they won't want to hear it then. Guest che Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Send it back most flat screens these days are pretty good and are virtually made by three different companies. Maybe you just got a bad lot. Che. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 It's probably not the monitor, but instead the PCs came in with funky display defaults. I don't like "Clear Type" font smoothing, and that's what Windows XP now defaults to at work. To see if this is the problem, right mouse click the desktop and then click "Properties". Go to the "Appearance" tab and click "Effects". Make sure the box for "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" is checked and set the pull-down to "Standard". Look at your screen again and see if that's better. If the box was checked and you don't like it, try unchecking it. BTW, "clear type" smoothing was put into Windows XP because of flat panel monitors. It makes me nauseous. Kevin Quote
Uncle Skid Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 In addition to what Kevin suggested, try changing the resolution. In Windows, it's "screen area" under Display Properties->Settings. Flat-panel monitors all have "native" resolutions -- the resolution in which everything will look the sharpest. If it is set to the a different resolution, it will still display something, but it might look quite awful. This is different than normal monitors, which were capable of supporting many different resolutions. On flat panels, the native resolution is usually 1024x768 (15"), or 1280x1024(17" or larger). David Ayers Posted March 22, 2005 Author Report Posted March 22, 2005 Thanks guys. Actually I was set at Standard and switched to Clear Type which I think is slightly better... I also changed to a better resolution. Again that has made a difference. It still isn't great though. I'm told the quality should be OK so maybe I just don't get on well with this kind of screen. (I wear contacts which I don't think helps). Quote
